June 27 1988 Tyson annihilates Spinks

I wonder if Spinks relives June 27 over & over in his mind like his own Groundhog Day.

 

Not as bad as Feb 10 for Tyson. For 2 reasons.

 

I was there in Atlantic City Convention Center for this fight.

It’s the most savage 91 seconds of sport I’ve ever witnessed. Tyson was a keg of dynamite that exploded on Spinks.

I remember the day, none of the boxing fans I knew were very surprised. It was quite the spectacle, of course. Spinks in my eyes was exposed as the overhyped "heavyweight" he was (does anyone not believe he would have been squished by Smith and Witherspoon, too?).

 

1:11-1:20 & the Oscar goes to…someone else.

 

The overhead shot of the second knockdown showed Spinks's eyes rolled up. He was legit knocked silly.

 

They showed them wide in fear looking lucidly at the ref. The, “falling” into the ropes was icing on the cake. Tommy Wiseau could not have acted any better.

That can get overstated quite a bit, though. I’ve seen people hit their heads on concrete with blood everywhere - average Joe’s - & they take it surprisingly well in many instances.

Spinks was only 32 in that loss and he retired right after, only 32 pro fights as well. Had he stuck around could he have rebuilt his legacy had he won a few fights after before hanging it up for good?

 

I don’t think he had the desire to do so.

He had some knee issues which hampered his mobility. He had already jumped up in weight to go from light heavyweight champion to heavyweight champion.

Dropping down to 190 to win a title at cruiserweight wasn’t overly prestigious or lucrative. He was coming off huge paydays in fighting Cooney and especially Tyson.
