Does Duran’s machismo and moving up in weight takes the cake or does Monzon’s cold demeanor and better win/loss record, retiring as a undefeated champ seal it?

Monzon throwing a woman out of a balcony kinda removes him from the bad ass category IMO.

Definately Duran. A former lightweight who gave one of the best Middleweights of all time a hard fight and finally won the middleweight crown by outpunching a very intimidating (and 3 weight champion) Iran Barkley. As well as great wins over Leonard, Buchanan he feasted on the fearsome punching Pipino Cuevas, destroyed young upstart Davey Moore and even as a geriatric beat former middle champ Jorge Castro.

Monzon had that steely coldness to him but he never ventured out of his weight class. Some mentioned he avoided Rodrigo Valdez until after he had a serious accident that damaged his mighty right hand. I know his best wins were over a faded Benvenuti, aged Emile Griffith and solid European level fighters and reigning welterweight champion. Doesn´t sound very bad ass to me.

"Badass" and "Psychopath" are terms that should not be confused.

I'm not sure if Monzon would have ever had the aura Duran ended up with, Duran is like Foreman, SRL, Holyfield in that when you watch videos of them at more recent events it's like wow it would be so cool/exciting to even just be in the same room as them

Like watch the video of Duran explaining how to beat Mayweather's shell and think if Monzon could ever be that cool

Duran takes it for me in the badass factor.

A better comparison would have been Roberto Duran and Salvador Sanchez. Sanchez also had a pretty cold, stoned face demeanor in the ring like Monzon but at least he didn't resort to women beating and murder.

To stop Monzon you gotta shoot him from ringside.

Duran if hit badly can go down and lose by KO like with Hearns.

The Hands of Stone left his women alone.

Besides leaving women alone Duran courage and self confidence in scaling the weights was as badass as it gets. Having a crack at Leonard was a big move but even more so was going straight at Hagler after beating Davey Moore.

Hagler had stopped his previous eight opponents and there were quite a few tough full blown middleweights among them. He was on a streak and Duran's chances of even going the distance weren't rated good. As an ex long term lightweight he should have been given a wheelbarrow in which to carry his balls into the ring. Many years after this he not only took on a big strong hard hitting middleweight champ but actually beat him. Worth remembering this was a guy who had stopped a guy that decimated Duran in just 2 rounds.

There's some serious badass in that lot and that's without even getting into out of the ring Duran stories.
