Always been a big fan of sports documentaries even in sports I'm not particularly interested in , however as a lifelong boxing fan..what are the momenta that made you genuinely feel sad as a boxing fan, can be your favourite fighter retiring, a travesty of a result or something else I always think back to Erik Morales vs Manny Pacquiao 3....Morales wasn't even my favourite fighter, and even though he still had a few more career wins afterwards..this fight sticks with me...that second knockdown in round 3...where he sits ....arms around his knees... looking straight forward....the cogs turning.....it's like he knows hes missing something, like hes just not got it anymore, his chin cannot stand up to this onslaught like it maybe could a few years ago, he casts his eyes to his corner...gives a small shake of the head ..and blinks. A fighter as tough and great as Erik Morales, as proud as he was , that dawning moment...he knew he was done... I still think about this moment often when I see an aging fighter trying to go back to the well for one last great performance And they just don't have it. Other one will be controversial, I'd watched alot of Antonio margaritos career and always appreciated him for what he was...I just thought he was the hardest **** alive and the guy gave you what he had...solid chin and through punches like a windmill in a hurricane, just had the biggest victory of his career over cotto and I was elated....next fight...hand wrap scandal...you find out a guy whose been one of your boxing heroes may have been cheating for God knows how long and proceeds to get a kicking off sugar Shane ..I remember being really depressed throughout that fight. And in regards to bad decision.... Marquez vs pacman 3...didn't watch boxing for ages after that robbery...I was so pissed off What are some of your saddest boxing moments
Alexis Arguello losing the rematch to bottle boy pryor. Notice name not capitalized. Very similar to Morales. Alexis seated, looking to his corner shaking his head no. Broke my little heart. And to think, that was on Wide World of Sports, regular TV, no PPV nonsense. If that caliber of fight happened today, it would be $300.00. And you know what, I'd still pay. LOL
Seeing Maurice Hooker get slapped around by Cobbs genuinely made me sad. I know Hooker wasn’t the best but I always liked him as a person and a fighter. Even sadder is that one of Hooker’s closest friends died right before the fight and he really wanted to win it for her.
Seeing my boy Sugar Robert Helenius getting knocked out by Gerald Washington of all people. Sad. Thought it was all over. He did redeem himself by ending Kownacki though.
I watched Patrick Day, Maxim Dadashev and Kazuki Anaguchi matches live. So the aftermaths, knowing I saw their last moments of consciousness, before shuffling off their mortal coils, took a bit of an emotional toll.
Far from the saddest but Robbie Peden puking blood in his corner during fight against Juan Manuel Marquez was pretty tough to watch. The ref made the right call in stopping it.
Hi Guys. Quite a few if I was to give it some thought, what springs to mind straight away is the sickening beating the seasoned battler Duran gave to the relatively raw Davey Moore, round after round of brutal punishment meted out to the likeable young fighter, fights like this give me pause for thought on our " sport " so sad...... stay safe guys.
I witnessed something terribly sad recently. I've buried deep inside my mind to forget but i know it exists. May 18th 2024. D-Day. Worse than Nagasaki & Hiroshima. Worse than any human tradegy to have ever plagued mankind.
100% this. Or permanently damaged by a fight. GMan against Benn, for example... Belter of a fight, but you could tell something was badly wrong with McLellan in the later rounds. Left in a truly awful state for life.
when arguello lost to pryor, i cried. alexis was my sports idol. seeing him stopped broke my young heart.
Seeing Ali get pummeled by Holmes always stands out for me when I think of sad boxing moments. Happened right around the time I became a hardcore boxing fan.
