Not a prayer, though it would have been an interesting wrinkle. D’Amato would keep him on the straight & narrow longer, but Tyson was already showing in his youth he was a basket case born. & even if he wasn’t, he mismanaged his money so severely as to need to fight on long enough to be bested even if he’d run his discipline perfectly.

No, it would merely have delayed the inevitable.

I think he'd have one of the longest reigns in HW history if Cus was alive his entire career. Cus is the same guy who steered Patterson away from Liston for nearly half a decade and had him fight a bunch of powder puffs in his title reign, I'd imagine Cus would do the same for Tyson and he'd have more defenses, a better record and less losses if Cus remained in his corner.

Cus died a year before Tyson even won a title and he was a sick old man aged 77. Stop grasping for straws.

Tyson was fine. Cus died in 1985 I believe. Splitting from Rooney was a huge mistake. The peek a boo style has a short shelf life. Eventually Tyson would need to evolve imo.

I mean, as much as useful and underrated Rooney was in his corner, he wasn't a positive influence either outside, considerin' sum accounts I read here too

It's just that Rooney trusted Bill Cayton and saw how evil were Given and her mother. Tyson didn't accept that so he fired him.

    No.

Tyson maybe lasts a little longer on top, but that’s about it.

Tyson was simply doomed to derail his career at some point. He had just about every bad habit and vice that ruined so many athletes: alcohol, drugs, women, anger issues, slacking off in training, wasting money on crap, etc. Cus trying to keep that under wraps as a man in his late 70's would be like trying to stop a flood with a 2 ft dam. At some point, Tyson does what he wants to do. All young man reach that point, and the majority act upon the impulse to think on their own.

Even if for the sake of argument Tyson somehow kept up with his strict training regiment and didn't make so many mistakes, he wasn't perfect. The peak a boo style has flaws for both offense and defense. Tyson himself would always have issues with Douglas, Holyfield, and Lewis no matter how focused he was because of the stylistic clashes.

For real. It’s like asking “Would Holyfield be undefeated if he was in prime physical and mental condition his whole career?”. These Mike Tyson hypothetical questions are getting out of hand

Certainly he could have lasted a little longer at the top. He wouldn’t have slowed down as much as he did later on, especially after prison. However, Tyson had a psychological wall that blocked him, and regardless of whether D’Amato is there or not, he’s not going past it. He still would have lost against top tier boxers like Holyfield and Lewis.

No. I think he would have lasted longer if he was kept away more from the likes of Don King and Cus probably would have succeeded on that front, maybe. He's not going undefeated whole career tho.
