I know of one such fight - Canelo Vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. Light middleweight limit of 154 pounds, and the fight was agreed upon at 152 pounds. Can you tell me about any other such fights? When are they scheduled, why? I welcome any information about such fights.
Sugar Ray Leonard vs Donny LaLonde. A fight that was fought for 2 titles in 2 different weight class (168 and 175). LaLonde was the LHW champion but was made to go down the 168 lb limit.
Loads of fights were contested at a catchweight. Canelo had several at 155lbs. RJJ vs Trinidad and Hopkins vs Winky Wright were both contested at 170lbs. There will be thousands of other examples.
This is just illogical. I just didn't know about this. Become a champion in two categories with one fight.
It was very absurd for such a thing to happen in the first place but that was what Sugar Ray Leonard demanded for. Which is why I figured this fight would be a good example for a category that shouldn't exist in the first place.
Tony Canzoneri fought both Jack Kid Berg and Barney Ross x 2 at 135lbs, with the LW and LWW world titles simultaneously on the line, in each fight.
I remember watching Cassius Baloyi vs Phillip Ndou fight. The fact that it was made at a catchweight of 127 pounds was not particulary unique, but what made me laugh was ring announcer introducing it as the fight for "The Catchweight Championship of the World"... or maybe "World Catchweight title", something along those lines in any case.
This was the first time WBC recognised SMW. Lalonde was the reigning WBC LHW champ Was for a vacant SMW belt
Whitaker-Chavez was at a catchweight of 145. So was Pacquiao-Cotto. Hopkins-De La Hoya was at 158. Leonard-Hearns 2 was at 164. Leonard-Duran 3 was at 162.
