Joe Frazier may have won the FOTC but I don’t think he was ever the same after that night. Ali lost but he also beat the ever loving dog caca out of Frazier.
There's also the fact that Foreman is ten times the finisher Shavers ever was. That's merely speculation. An inferior, still developing, Foreman was battering Chuvalo who's chin was better than Ali, and Holy, and on par with Mercer and McCall. Chuvalo was battered, defenseless, and getting pounded on by will, and was going to down if the ref didn't step in so Foreman stopping Holyfield, Mercer, and McCall isn't a stretch at all. Especially if they're hit with the same shots Frazier was hit with.
Their were even rumors Frazier died that night, and Ali broke down in tears and said if it's true, he was never going to fight again.
Frazier kept walking straight into the punches. Devastating performance from Foreman but dumb from Frazier.. Yank Durham wanted Joe to retire before this fight which is not a positive sign for the shape Frazier was in. He had various health issues.
I’m sure Foreman’s corner wasn’t screaming at him to gas himself out. Also George’s motivations after winning the belt much like most champs took a back seat to women and other fun things. Not sure how much he was listening to his corner at that point. That being said Ali had his own good corner.
So you're saying if Frazier had Mercers chin, he would have gotten bounced around? Yes Chuvalo was stopped but he was on his feet at the time of stoppage and he certainly didn't go down 5, 6, 7 times and when he did get up wobbling around seeing stars over his head. I will not believe that Mercer or McCall or Holyfield would be stopped in 2 rounds after rolling around the canvas for each of those 2 rounds unless I saw it.
True, Frazier suffered some other KDs during his career but no other fighter did to Joe what George did before or after. Not even close. Foreman also did it again in the rematch, BUT, in a much more measured and methodical manner, therefore extending the fight a few rounds longer than the first match. Had Foreman opted to go for broke from opening bell in fight 2, he would’ve likely seen Joe off in a just a few rounds again. Per the vision, the biggest and most flush punches Foreman ever landed, and punches concentrated into just the one, relatively brief fight, were those George put to Frazier in Jamaica. The shots Foreman landed in the rematch were also extremely heavy duty. Ali never took anywhere the type of powerful head shots Frazier did and, FWIW, Ali admitted that George still truly rung his bell from what he did land on the far more defensively adept (than Frazier) Ali. I personally think it was extraordinary for Frazier to have to taken what he did from Foreman and STILL, somehow, be standing when the fight was finally called.
Frazier bent at the waist and hovered with his head over his lead foot. Right hands and Uppercuts were bound to find him sooner or later he was a very diminished fighter he left it all out on the field with Ali.
This - I've heard similar. Look at his weight for the two prior bouts to Foreman. He got up for Foreman with a similar effort as he did the likes of Daniel’s. He was waiting for Ali 2 I think that might’ve been it if he won.
Against who? Shavers? Snipes? Galaxies short of being hurt by a finisher of Foreman’s calibre. & Holyfield would be tenderised.
That's exactly what I'm saying. It's not as simple as "If Frazier had a better chin, he wins lolz". He was facing a man who not only has a strong case for hardest puncher of all time (at the very least top 5), but one who had huge stylistic advantages that not only negated Frazier's defense but also more or less insured Frazier would absorb even more of the impact than an ordinary contender. What do you think would've happened had the bout went on even another 30 seconds? Chuvalo goes down, and he's certainly not getting up six ****Ing times. Also Chuvalo didn't endure nearly as much punishment as Frazier did. Actually Holyfield a tendency to slug it out with bigger punchers than him, and fight his way out of trouble when hurt. If he tried that here, Foreman would shut **** down real quick. A green Foreman stopped the iron chinned Chuvalo in 3 rounds, yet you don't see ANY possible scenario where a prime one stops Mercer and McCall a mere round earlier?
Excellent post. Put it better than I ever could (Unfortunately, JT and I are gonna have to sort you out for outclassing me yet again). It's not as simple as "All Frazier needed was a better chin lolz". Such a simplistic take. It was just a horrible horrible stylistic matchup, and no amount of chin would overcome that. On another note, though Frazier lasting longer was primarily because of Foreman's new style (and imo inferior punching power due to his change in body mechanics), I've always been impressed with the shots Frazier endured in that second fight, especially with the shape he was in. Their was one right cross, left hook combo that was especially brutal that Foreman landed (I'm pretty sure it was round 2) that would've taken out the vast majority that Frazier somehow stayed upright for. Again though, whether you have the chin of Leon Spinks or George Chuvalo, with a style like that, you ain't winning or even going the distance.
The version of Frazier that fought Foreman in 1973 was a shell of what he had been in the FOTC. Joe was partying and living the high life-plus that war against Ali in March 1971 took a HUGE toll on him. He really was never the same after that. But even if Frazier was in FOTC shape I don't think he could ever beat Foreman. It was the worst possible matchup for him! Joe's style was absolutely tailor made for Foreman's devastating power--especially with his brutal uppercuts! Bottom line-George was simply too big and too powerful for Frazier. (If they fought 100 times George would probably win 99 out of 100.)
