sad to see. This Joyce isn't even 50% of the guy he was when he destroyed Parker. That Joyce was very good. No, he wasn't unbeatable or anything. But he was a different level than this guy. Zhang is such a bad match up for Joyce.
I don't think he's the same, that's true, but he isn't completely shot. He showed he can still take a good punch, he is right now at gatekeeper level. But the Zhang fight has taken something out of him even if his chin is still intact. I don't think he has the hunger he had before now he knows he can be beat. Since the first loss to Zhang he's been fighting in the 280's and that's too heavy even for him, I question if he has the desire anymore to really push himself in the gym now the self belief is gone. I think he'd lose to Parker now. He relies so much on his jab to set everything up and if he can't land it, much of his offence is nullified and he then needs to take punches to land his own.
I honestly think Joyce peaked four years ago against Dubois. In that fight he had head movement, an active guard and unpredictability to his jab. Since then, he’s regressed into not much more than a slugger. Perhaps he bought into the juggernaut hype or simply turned over to the pros too late. His career was another hurt badly by Covid lockdowns. The Joyce from last night gets knocked out by Dubois and probably even young Moses Itauma.
He didn't even turn pro until he was 31 for goodness sake and he's about to turn 39 and he's taken a biblical amount of punishment in both sanctioned fights and in the gym. And he's completely screwed up his slow-fast speed equilibrium by coming in that heavy. Big Bang could KO The Statue of Liberty and it took his enormous Chinese power to get Big Joe out of there
The problem is he just lost to a guy who's even older, and who has taken biblical amounts of punishment over a much longer career.
yeah, maybe. my instinct is to split the 'blame' roughly 50:50 between Zhang and plain old father time.
Dubois might very well beat him now. He's learned to move his head a bit and that was his problem in the first fight, he had no head movement so was easily controlled by the jab of Joyce. Joyce is heavily reliant on his jab setting up the rest of his offence without it he struggles and has to take chances to land which we saw vs Zhang and Chisora. I think Joyce should try and make a fight with Hrgovic. Hrgovic doesn't move his bead much and will eat jabs off Joyce and lacks the power to KO him with one shot, that's a winnable fight for Joyce. Both coming off big losses and need a win to turn their careers around. Anderson would be another fight Joyce might be able to win as Anderson again has no head movement, that is if Anderson gets past Bakole.
I thought he looked done in the kash Ali fight. Hang them up or become stepping stones for itauma and fisher
walking him straight into a career-ending Zhang rematch was either total hubris from Warren, or punishment for derailing his boy Dubois
Maybe Joyce was never that good. Chisora is definitely more "shot" than Joyce. I think Chisora is/ was at a higher level than Joyce ever was. Chisora's record looks bad as he fought the best and also was on the wrong end of some dubious judging.
Joyce has never been very good, he's been the same guy his whole pro career. Uses his massive granite head and pressure to force you into submission.....technically he's dreadful. He's slow and can't push the pace of a fight. Has no head movement. Has minimal punch power. The guys he "knocked out", besides Parker, were all guys slower than him who didn't have the heart to fight on.
