Rex Layne was a solid fighter until suffering a few losses diminished him. I’d favor quarry on resume but this is a very tough tough fight if both are ideally at their best

only if the referee was Dempsey he could beat Charles! Quarry by KO.

Nat Fleischer in his write-up for The Ring, scored it 5-5 in rounds, although he would have given the edge to Charles on the New York supplemental points system (because Charles won the last round).

Jack Hurley scored it 6-4 for Layne

The UP report said that most of the ringside press scored it 4-3-3 for Charles.

I've learned from watching Gavilan-Graham 3 to never trust others' claims of a "robbery."

Generally considered to be a poor decision by Dempsey.

Layne is undervalued...he also has a decision against an underperforming Walcott, and wins against Satterfield and Turkey Thompson. And he did pretty well in the early half of the fights with Charles, but Charles took control late.

Ezzard was a close friend of my father, it was my dad who pick-up Ezzard at his apartment in south shore and his wife Gladys. 1st apt. stairs in his wheel chair and brought him to his benefit banquet. Dad had a friend helping him. Ezzard and my dad Davey Day where very close friends for over 30 yrs or so. Ezzard was the best and when he beat Louis, he eased up, if you know what I mean.

I agree. Quarry by decision with some good exchanges along the way.
