Ali never came close to being knocked out and the few times he was knocked down, he still wasn't close to being knocked out. He always got up quickly after the few the times he was knocked down. parkinsons ali was nearly floored by shavers more than once but he still didn't go down. he was practically blind during almost half of his first fight against Liston yet he never came close to being even slightly dazed.
If a fight between Ali and Tyson really happened, with both at their peak and fully aware of each other, Ali wouldn't have taken any chances, either in or out of the ring. He would have mocked Tyson's lisp and harassed him for being raised by Cus, a white man, and then done everything necessary to overcome Tyson physically. He would have had to perform more than he ever did, but he would have gotten it done. Ali's fusillade against Brian London was one of the very few showcasings of Ali really demonstrating what he could do during his peak.

If Ali in the late '60s had even half the durability he showed in the '70s and was taking it very serious then he would wash Tyson over. Tyson has repeatedly said throughout his life that no one beats a prime Muhammad Ali.

I have no issue with any pick here, but just love how Tyson fans argue. They will only accept the Berbick to Spinks version of Tyson, which was 1,5 years, and then in the next breath bring up Ali fights from Jones to Norton, which spans a decade.

If threads like these specify Ali: Patterson-Terrell vs Tyson: Berbick-Spinks it might iron out some inconsistencies. Or it will devolve into some nonsense about how early 70's Ali really was the best version of him while late 90's version of Tyson of course was shot to bits. Might be worth a try, though.

I did not see one single fight in Ali’s prime where he wasn’t taking risks.

Incorrect, he was badly hurt in the first Frazier fight. It's not a stretch to say Tyson could possibly put him away when hurt.

Ali was a sucker for a left hook in his prime and wasn't as tight defensively or technically as Tyson imo. Ali really did not like pressure fighters and I think Tyson is all wrong for him personally. I reckon 70s Ali has a better chance of going the distance than prime 60s Ali though since he went life and death with Doug Jones and was dropped by Cooper and Sonny Banks. Ali was not some unhittable phantom and being incredibly tough helps win fights but it is not the most important factor.

Prime and focused Ali is too fast and clever for Mike who would have his moments but ultimately the Greatest stops him late

I call it for what it is: blatant hypocrisy. It's perfectly fine to skim through various moments of a boxer's career where he looked bad and bring that up in the discussion. Doesn't matter if it was when they were a rookie, old man, had just switched trainers, were recovering from an injury, etc.

Can't do that with Tyson for some reason. You are limited to that very narrow 2 year window of his "prime" and nothing else matters apparently. What's even funnier is some of Tyson's actual opponents he faced dealt with issues that were arguably worse than what he went through, but they don't get a pass either.

The same way Doug Jones a 180 pounder almost beat Ali. The same way Henry Cooper a 180 pounder almost knocked out Ali. You will say but Tyson lost to Buster Douglas. Great and like I said Ali struggled against 180 pound guys. What 180 fighter did a pro Tyson ever struggle against. Ali could always be hit by a good hook. Tyson had a great hook.

If bother guys were in shape and in their primes I would pick Tyson to beat Ali more times than I would pick Ali to beat Tyson and I can't stand Mike Tyson

You don’t fool anyone equating a single punch knockdown out of the blue to getting your arse handed to you for ten straight rounds en route to getting knocked senseless.

    Hi Buddy.
As always you make some good points, that said, the Clay of 62/63 that fought Banks, Cooper, Jones, was still maturing, by the time we got to 67, he was pretty much a unhittable phantom, and by then he was bigger, heavier, and a much more rounded and seasoned fighter, I would back that fighter to beat all and sundry, including the aforementioned Mike Tyson.
    stay safe DG, chat soon.

If we are talking about the entire career, of course Ali is winning, but I don't see a problem in comparing prime vs prime taking into account the best periods and versions of both of them, taking into account the shortcomings that were revealed in other periods or fights. So for me it's ok to take Tyson from Holmes, Biggs or Spinks, in which he was flawless, but at the same time not forgetting that he was weak against tall outfighters who could clinch in weak periods of their career. Same Ali. obviously we can't take Ali away from Doug Jones and Cooper, but we can't ignore the fact that he was susceptible to hooking, as these fights showed.
