Is that the general consensus on this? I was too young for that era of his later-reign to be watching live, all I remember really was Kellerman being on his nuts all of the time on ESPN. Did a good amount of people consider him unwatchable? I find him pretty entertaining when going back to watch.

Sergio Mora was the most unwatchable fighter I've ever watched multiple times.

The master at hit and don't get hit, while not making fans out of it.

Honestly I found Whitaker entertaining people call him a runner but he really wasn't he was always in punching range and stood infront of his opponent.

If you like more competitive fights though or KO's then I can see how fans probably were a bit turned off by him as he won a majority of his fights by wide point decisions without many stoppages in his career.

PS Whitaker didn't have many stoppages but his KO of Hurtado was brutal you won't find many more brutal KO's than that.

That Hurtado KO was crazy (wasn't he behind on the cards?)
When I look back at that time period, I'm thinking maybe there were just more exciting fighters around then so no one really wanted to invest their time in watching a master boxer go to work for an hour, doing the same thing.

He was yeah and also suffered 2 flash knockdowns aswell. It was a must win fight for Whitaker otherwise the big pay vs ODLH would've gone down the tubes.

Obviously Whitaker could see those dollar signs so he went all out to get the KO in an uncharacteristically brutal fashion for him.

Yeah, those were the later years too! His fight with Tito got him some money as well. I personally love to watch him, I studied his style and implemented some back in my day.

I think sometimes he can fool around too much but otherwise no, from what I watched I like his style.

Far from it. He usually would stand in range making a guy miss while giving them a spanking and he did this to world class opposition. I love watching him fight.

I have never watched a Sweet Pea fight and been bored. As far as a hierarchy of defensive fighters that are boring, he's probably the least boring of them all........................

I find this disrespectful Whitaker isn't a real fighter what ? And you saying Whitaker is a runner means you haven't watched his fights.

Whitaker was not a runner he was always in punching range and would make his opponents miss and school them.

The whole point of boxing is hit and not get hit and Whitaker mastered that by staying infront of his opponent that is an art my friend that should be appreciated.

Ottke won his title in 98, I'd say he makes Whitaker look like Gatti in comparison.

Henry Maske, Virgil Hill, Sven Ottke, were all pretty dull fighters to watch IMO from the 90s.
