Dempsey ,Louis,Quarry, were proven against modern sized heavyweights, and top ranked ones at that.

Dempsey was a whole different proposition to Marciano,he was quicker afoot , faster into range, with better hand speed, better defence ,longer reach,[5 in] and tougher skin.
Louis was 200lbs, six feet one and a half,7 in of reach, with the complete arsenal of every punch in the book ,economical and highly accurate with a great jab, blistering combinations, balance and fine boxing ability.

Louis is the only one I'd bet on there to have a chance against a peak Mercer due to his amazing jab. Otherwise, I think Ray is a hard man to get past by most Cruiser sized heavies simply due to everything that he's got.

Would have to be mercer on his best night. In an absolute war I'd take mercer to win by late stoppage both men busted up

When I first joined this forum I had a debate with Seamus about Chavez vs Whitaker draw I thought he was serious. Then when I got to know him I realized that's just part of his personality lol along with his Henry Maske comments being the GOAT.

Joe Louis was completely past his best at that point and didn't resemble his former self at all.

Don Cockell was a fat blown up Light Heavyweight who was 5'11 with a 71 inch reach. And wouldn't even be a top 20 Heavyweight in any Heavyweight era of the last 50 years.

Let's compare them shall we ?

Evander Holyfield 6'2 77 inch reach.

Rocky Marciano 5'11 67 inch reach.

Holyfield bulked up on steroids and was bench pressing 300 pounds and was incredibly strong and far more athletic than Marciano with a staggering 10 inch reach advantage.

You guys live in a fantasy world if you honestly believe a 5'10 67 inch reach Cruiserweight with Marciano's style is out slugging much stronger athletic Heavyweights with 40-50 pound weight advantage.

And before you mention Tyson he was Marciano's weight at 14 years old and is one of the most athletic fastest Heavyweights of all time and is not comparable to Marciano at all.

Dempsey didn’t punch as hard as Marciano and wasn’t nearly as sophisticated defensively. He did have quicker hands though. But he was still around the same weight. Dempsey beat one giant man who was rusty and never was a good fighter to begin with. But no one questions him.

The whole argument is weight…Louis weighed in the low 190s beginning of his career and wipes the floor w primo at 196. Once again he’s never questioned. I get it he’s more proven against better comp butttttt Marciano did face 11 men at 200 plus and he went 11-0 w 11KOs there is nothing there that says he can’t compete w heavier men.

A 90 year old Holmes beat him…some guy named Jesse Ferguson beat him. Is Mercer the new forum Tua? He was a good fighter let’s not hype him up to be something he’s not

A disinterested Mercer would have a field day with Marciano.

Mercer was extremely green against both Holmes and Ferguson, not to mention the fact that he basically quit in the latter fight and tried to bribe Jesse to let him win- He learned immensely from both fights. But still, these aren't HORRIBLE losses. Holmes would go on to be competitive against Holyfield and McCall, and Ferguson was a heavy handed, rough operator who could make a tough fight for anybody not named Tyson or Bowe. But the version of Ray that fought Lewis was something else completely.
