Well he was fine going into the Williams fight. His mental state only deteriorated after the fight. Probably at least in part, because he knew that draw eliminated his chances for a shot at the title. The final straw, I believe was he couldn't afford to buy Christmas presents for his children and nobody would lend him money.
I forgot to mention it in my other post but the link in your previous post doesn't work. I also made an amendment to my previous post for Patterson's ko losses before the Machen fight, I don't know if they were there when you read it, it was to point out that Patterson had been knocked out 3 times himself by then.
My apologies. I'll provide a separate link as well as an additional one regarding Machen's mental health issues, specifically the final straw.

I've always questioned whether Machen was ever 100% the same after his landmark loss to Johansson. I don't think he ever quite showed the same fire & intensity after that as he had on the way up (like in the clip below), except maybe on isolated occasions. This content is protected
For what it’s worth, Machen was rated number 2 going into the ‘64 Patterson fight, having won 5 straight. While Patterson had been blasted out by Liston in 2 of his last 3 fights preceding the Machen bout.
Machen was rated number 2, moreso based on his prior work before his trip to the looney bin. Similar to Williams, laughably becoming number 2 when he faced Ali. The men Machen beat were either unrated their entire careers or hadn’t seen a rating in years.
