I remember back in a day, while scrolling through fighters records, here and then I'd find an odd lay-off, period of inactivity - and only later on I'd find out about some fights that were cancelled. I think that's when I started putting this list together, years ago.
I wasn't actively working on it, just adding some stuff here and there when I learned about something, but it eventually grew quite long - and I did not see similar kind of list elsewhere.
I think at times it can be useful information, adding perspective on fighter's career development. It's also interesting to see how close some great fights were to happening.

The list is below. If anyone knows of any other examples - and I mean fights that were already made, only fell through later for various reasons - I'd be very curious to know about them, to add them to the list. It's mostly about big fights - but also some more obscure match-ups that You think would've been interesting.
Also, if anyone notices some inacurracies - please let me know also.

Victor Galindez v Bob Foster on 5/28/77 for the light heavyweight title - Foster refused a medical examination that CBS insisted on (probably because of his age - I think he was 38) to air the show and the fight was cancelled on April 22nd.

Thanks a lot guys! I added Galindez vs Foster fight. Always thought of them as belonging to different eras, so very interesting to find out They nearly fought one another.
Terry Norris vs Simon Brown was rescheduled soon enough - I don't add those type of instances, since They are pretty common - but still, I watched that clip with a lot of interest.

Mike Weaver had signed to fight Gerry Cooney on Oct. 22, 1981, but an injunction to force Weaver to make his mandatory vs. James Tillis or be stripped canceled the fight. Weaver fought Tillis instead about three weeks earlier than that date.

This card was scheduled for Feb. 23, 1981, at Madison Square Garden:

Gerry Cooney vs. Ken Norton, heavyweights, 10 rounds

Matthew Saad Muhammad vs. Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, light heavyweight WBC/WBA unification, 15 rounds

Thomas Hearns (c) vs. Wilfred Benitez, WBA welterweight championship, 15 rounds

Wilfredo Gomez (c) vs. Mike Ayala, WBC super bantamweight championship, 15 rounds

Hilmer Kenty (c) vs. Alexis Arguello, WBA lightweight championship, 15 rounds

Aaron Pryor was originally slated to appear but backed out recovering from a (non-career-threatening) gunshot wound inflicted by his wife.

Cooney-Norton happened, as did Hearns-Benitez at a later date.

The event was canceled when the promoter, Harold Rossfield Smith (aka Ross Fields) went into hiding when it was discovered he had embezzled more than $20M from Wells Fargo bank. An arrest warrant was issued and he was found and arrested (maybe he turned himself in, I forget, but he was on the run for a bit.

Gerry Cooney may hold the record for cancelled fights. He even had one cancelled against the guy in my avatar, Roughhouse Fischer, when the Felt Forum/MSG employees went on strike. You could probably do an entire thread on him alone.

Thanks a lot! Just a small correction after some detective work. It wasn't in 1997, but December of 1996 - and was suppose to be the main event on the HBO card which featured James Toney vs Montell Griffin rematch.

Here, I believe fight was not really signed. The beginning of the article also seems to confirm it:
"When Bernard Hopkins left for a vacation in Cancun, Mexico, this weekend, he left behind his contract to fight International Boxing Federation cruiserweight champion James Toney.
    Unsigned."

It's sometimes difficult to find out what fight was really agreed on and which were just really close to being signed - but I try to keep that distinction here.
    Thanks nonetheless!
