What’s the Classic Forums thoughts on Gaby Canizales? How good of a fighter was he at BW? He seems to always be overlooked by his more popular younger brother Orlando Canizales but I honestly think he has a better resume than him. Wasn’t as skilled or talented as Orlando and he’s shown to have a fairly one dimensional style that makes him susceptible to being outboxed but he could certainly punch, had a heart of a lion, and was a fun fighter to watch. I don’t think Orlando has a single win as good as Miguel Lora or Richie Sandoval.
Some of Gaby Canizales’ notable fights. In a way he kind of reminds me of Roberto Duran. His destruction of Sandoval was really Duran-esque. This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected
Makes you wonder how successful Orlando Canizales would be if he fought Gaby’s lists of opponents. I honestly think Gaby would have looked better against the guys Orlando fought.
I don't know how great a barometer of his skills the win over Sandoval really was. Sandoval was fighting in non-title bouts at roughly 130 around that time, and had no business trying to pare down to 118 anymore. He was half dead in the ring that night. Almost took him the rest of the way out, thank God he turned out okay but he was terribly compromised against Canizales. Gaby was a solid, aggressive, hard punching guy who went to the body with authority and could take a great shot. You'll go a long way with that skillset and the right mindset.
Gaby Canizales’ thrilling slugfest with Louis Curtis. Thanks to @BoxingJournals for recommending this fight. This content is protected
Your kidding right? Louis Curtis fought a war with Gaby. Orlando took him out in 2 rounds. Orlando broke Clarence Adams jaw I believe in stopping him. Clarence went on to win a world title. Gaby was pretty good as a pro boxer and had great success but he is not even close to being in the class of Orlando. Orlando fought and beat much better fighters then Gaby did with the exception of Chandler who Gaby gave a pretty good fight to.
Happy was past his best you do know that right? Happy was a pretty good boxer that relied heavily on his reflexes and had he ever met Gaby in his prime he would be too much for Gaby. As it was he got caught by Gaby going for the finish which happens. Gaby wasn't anywhere close to Orlando in terms of skill or success in the pros. At one point Orlando had lost only once in 11 years. And out of Orlando's losses- which he only lost 5 times THREE were split decisions and two occurred early in his career. Sure Gaby fought Chandler but he LOST. Orlando was much more dedicated then Gaby was that is why you never saw random losses on Orlando's record like Gaby had. Kelvin Seabrooks had a brutal career in which either his manager was trying to get him hurt or he just didn't care about Kelvin. I mean this man fought everyone and sometimes well outside of his weight class. You should check out some of his bouts.
A past prime Lora is a lot better than Kelvin Seabrooks pal. And he'd be too much for Orlando as well mate. There is no argument for Orlando fighting OR beating better fights than Gaby. Nobody on Orlando's resume is as impressive as Lora or Sandoval, and I'll take a close loss to Chandler over a close loss to Vazquez. Btw, I don't know why you're arguing about whose better? I think Orlando is clearly better, and a greater fighter. But Gaby fought better fighters.
It would have been a difficult fight for sure as Lora was very fast and slick in his prime but past his prime Lora would get stopped by Canizales. Sandoval is so so in my opinion. He did beat Chandler but Chandler was a walking corpse during that fight. Good boxer with very good skills but also a boxer that got a lot of split decisions that went his way. Kelvin Seabrooks had a crazy career. After literally being thrown to the wolves turns around and wins a title and defends it a couple of times. I think Lora was better then Kelvin for sure but Sandoval I do not know. Pat Lawlor beat both Duran and Benitez. Do you think those are impressive wins?
I have always subscribed to the opinion that us older brothers deserve more spotlight. Gaby was no doubt extremely good, though. I've got my old Kayo card of him in a sleeve.
