Charles/Walcott/Marciano era * To simplify things, I left out a young Patterson 1---Rocky Marciano 2---Ezzard Charles 3---Jersey Joe Walcott 4---Archie Moore 5---Harold Johnson 6---Joe Louis 7---Clarence Henry 8---Bob Baker 9---Nino Valdes 10--Rex Layne 11--Bob Satterfield 12--Tommy Jackson 13--Earl Walls 14--John Holman 15--Roland LaStarza
LaStarza was a highly touted fighter of the era and marketable, but he had gigantic holes in his record Lastarza's reputation was built on the first Rocky fight. Although he had a long winning streak at the beginning of his career, there are no tough names on his record. After the first Marciano fight he could have forced the issue by meeting top fighters. He refused fights with Charles, Louis, Clarence Henry, Bob Baker etc. Lost and avenged to overstuffed lt.heavy Dan Bucceroni and to lt. heavy Rocky Jones and looked terrible against Jones in the rematch. The Jones win and a victory (disputable) over the faded Rex Layne gave him the credentials to meet Rocky for the title. A fight I am told Rocky was more intent on giving Roland a beating for all of the talk that he "was afraid" to meet LaStarza again than KOing him early which I believe he could have done easily. Look at LaStarza's record there are no tough names on it except for Marciano. There is complete film of the Jones rematch and I heard LaStarza looked terrible. Jones was approached at the morning weigh-in by Jimmy White (Amato) a shadowy figure who was a mob contact man and manager and told Rocky "we don't wan't any of that stuff that happened in Akron." Jones had two good rounds then was told to "cool it." LaStarza NEVER fought a dangerous opponent except Marciano and thats a fact if you know any of the fighters from his era. I am not saying that LaStarza was a coward but he (or his management) refused matches with Henry, Louis, Charles, Baker, and Archie Moore. In an article in RING magazine after his career LaStarza admitted as much, saying he wouldn't take those matches because he "deserved" a rematch with Marciano and thought he was offered the other matches by the IBC only because they were trying to knock him out of "his-rightful shot at Marciano." When Marciano fought LaStarza the first time Rocky was boxing for the first time after the Vingo tragedy. Rocky had threatened to quit boxing. Is it any wonder he was not the usual aggressive Marciano but an understandably gunshy, tenitive boxer that night ?
Bucceroni actually was the #1 contender after Valdez beat Charles...a lot of guys on this list never earned that distinction.
This is just a blatant underselling of Rex Layne, whos top 3 wins beat anything Bob Baker has, even if Bob Baker did beat a washed Layne. Unless youre referring to H2H matchups rather than achievement my list would look something more like: 1. Marciano 2. Charles 3. Walcott 4. Moore 5. Louis 6. Layne 7. Valdez 8. Baker 9. LaStarza 10. Satterfield 11. Henry 12. Cockell 13. James J Parker 14. Bucceroni 15. Jackson There's an argument for Moore over Walcott, to be honest
Your list is baffling.. Layne lost to Willie James, Harry Kid Matthews, Roland LaStarza, hurricane jackson 2x and he was lucky to be gifted a decision over Cesar Brion. That type of inconsistency doesn’t warrant a top 6 placement Valdes over Baker despite going 0-2? Clarence Henry went 3-0 vs Baker & Satterfield and you have him behind both? Have you seen Henry on film? He would have knocked LaStarza and Laynes heads off. Henry was blind by the time he lost to Jackson and Slade. Where is Harold Johnson ?? He beat almost every man on this list why is Cockell on this list?? He got knocked out in 4 rounds by Jimmy Slade. James J Parker but no Earl Walls? Walls was the Canadian Heavyweight champion. not Parker. Walls was also rated top 5 back to back years 53-54 in the world ratings. Walls knocked out Rex Layne twice. Walls also knocked out tomato can Bernie Renyolds in 1 round. Reynolds is known for winning by knockout in 2 rounds over guess who…James J Parker bucceroni over Jackson? When Jackson knocked him out. Jackson also knocked out Rex Layne twice, beat Ezzard Charles 2x, and beat Bob baker 2x. Your placement of Jackson is preposterous
Layne's 50-52 run is the best run of anyone not in the top 5, he beat Walcott, Satterfield and Charles. Who else here beat both. He wasnt lucky to be gifted a decision against Brion, it was just close, the AP had it 7-3 for Layne. Quick reminder he was 34-1 (loss avenged multiple times) when he went in and got ruined by Marciano. Valdes has better other names. I also put Charles over Walcott despite Charles going 1-2 against Walcott from 50-55. Baker has wins over Brion, Layne multiple times, Valdez (twice), Bivins, Wallace etc and was more active in general in 55' so i gave him the nod. Lost to Walcott, Lost to Moore multiple times and his one win was SD, Lost to Satterfield and only won because Satterfield ran hot and cold like crazy, Beat Valdez once, beat Charles. He should probably be on the lower end of my list, but i really felt like Bucceroni shouldve been on there and was conflicted He also beat Matthews, LaStarza and Lloyd Marshall and was ranked 2nd You are very offended by this take considering the fact that they fought to a draw lol. Which one of them beat Slade? Washed versions of Layne and Charles, stopped by Valdez, beaten by Slade, wasnt overall impressed, Bucceroni was ranked #1 at one point, beat Slade, LaStarza (a really good LaStarza no less), Parker and Hein Ten Hoff. Prefer it slightly. Also just seemed to be more consistent during his run. Jackson also doesnt have any names from 50-51, hard to be ranked highly in a 50-55 list when you didnt fight for 2 of the 5 years, and were a rookie fighting nobodies during the 3rd.
I'll give you 20. Marciano Ezzard Charles Moore Baker Clarence Henry Rex Layne Walcott Louis Valdes John Holman Tommy Jackson Harold Johnson Slade LaStarza Satterfield Cleveland Williams Cesar Brion Parker Marty Marshall Cockell
Referee: Jack Watson 5-4 Judge: Frank Forbes 3-7 Judge: Harold Barnes 2-7 James Dawson, New York Times, scored the bout 7-3 for Brion, giving Layne rounds 1, 2 and 8. Associated Press scored the bout 7-3 Layne. Dawson wrote: “Plunging and tossing like a rudderless ship, Rex Layne, Lewiston, Utah, heavyweight, somehow or other managed to gain a decision over Cesar Brion, from the Argentine, in ten dull rounds of fighting at Madison Square Garden last night. And if there is any consolation in a moral victory, Brion has it. A crowd of 5,768 booed the verdict and it was plain that many, if not the majority, thought Brion had won.”
Rex Layne is the most disrespected HW challenger all time on this forum. Men have accomplished 10x less and are given far more praise. His two crimes are being white and knocked out by Marciano. If he were in the 70s and he had wins against Patterson and Ellis people would be praising his name as an all time contender. Clarence Henry would also not knock Laynes head off. Would be a good fight. The best version of Layne is more accomplished than everyone past Johnson on the list.
I didn't say it did,I just thought it germane to the conversation.Excuse me for interfering! I'm flying to Cape Verde today so I wont be around to annoy you for a while.
