Toney would outbox him for the most part, Benn’s punches are too wide to get past Toney’s tight defence, Toney would out jab him. Toney slip, roll and deflect off the shoulders against fighters with much less tighter punches than Benn, so he’d most likely be able to see his punches coming. Maybe Benn can have some success up close by going to the body and throwing that windmill like right hand over the shoulder roll, but it’d be few and far between and he wouldn’t get enough work done to get the decision, Toney would do the more quality work.
Bad matchup for Benn. Toney was at his best against aggressive opponents. I believe he would counter punch the hell out of Benn. Fight would be similar to the Toney vs Barkley fight.
Awful style match-up for Benn. Toney thrived on countering aggression, and while Benn was able to vary his attacks more at 168 like in Eubank II, Toney did most things better than Eubank. Toney had a great chin and a fair dig himself at that weight, so it's not like Benn has the proverbial equaliser here either. If anything, Toney would be more likely to stop Benn than the other way around. The caveat to all this is that Toney could be very inconsistent (more so at 160 than 168 to be fair), and it's possible that Benn outworks a lacklustre Toney on one of his off days. It doesn't seem to be the most likely outcome though.
I have to favor Toney. Benn isn’t getting him out of there and Toney was too skilled offensively and defensively. I’m thinking Benn gets stopped at some point
Got to be Toney. He has those old school skills plus a great chin. But I don't see Toney stopping him either. James by unanimous
Barry Hearn and Warren weren't daft. They kept Benn and Eubank as far away from Toney as possible. There's a great book out about the Benn-Eubank rivalry called 'The hate game'. Jim McDonell is quoted as saying Toney and Mike McCallum were avoided ''like the plague.'' Toney would have absolutely picked Benn apart and people in the know around Benn knew it.
Toney by a mile. As mentioned by others it would be similar to Toney-Barkley. I think Benn might do a little better early on, at super-middle he learnt to box better and not rely on his power so much. See Eubank II and Wharton bouts but Toney is just too good. Nonetheless, the Toney that battered Barkley, rallied from a possible cuts defeat to crush undefeated speedster Tim Littles and took out decent former light-heavy champ Prince Charles Williams is not going to lose. Toney ko 11 a brave but busted up Benn.
