Canelo is fighting prime undefeated opponents, something Mayweather was afraid to do

Canelo Alvarez is taking a lot of unjustified criticism. He's taking on prime undefeated opponents, often men who are larger than himself, like Berlanga (22-0) last night. Before that, Canelo fought Munguia (43-0), Bivol (19-0), Saunders (30-0), L Smith (23-0), Plant (21-0) and the bigger C Smith (27-0).

Floyd Mayweather always avoided prime undefeated opponents (Williams, Cotto, De La Hoya). He waited until after they had been KOed (Cotto, Pacquiao, De La Hoya) before he dared enter the ring with them. He also fought smaller men (Marquez and Hatton, both of whom had to move up in weight), and a pre-prime youth (Alvarez).

Canelo takes abuse for not fighting the bigger man Benavidez, but let's not forget the so-called "Best Ever" avoided Trinidad, Wright, Margarito, Williams, and Forrest.

And yet, Floyd is the far superior boxer who didn't relied on gift decisions.

Totally agree. People want him to fight LWH champions (again). LOL. The same guys who hugged gg's nuts while he stayed in the same freaking weight smashing tomato cans for decades.

Canelo has been pushing his limits since the very beginning of his career. He found his limit in a really good champion at LHW in Bivol. I wish every fighter looked for their limits the same way canelo did. Moreover, he continues fighting the best fighters available in his weight (which is NOT LHW) prioritizing mexicans and puerto ricans when he fights in mexico's national days (something totally understandable).

What's next? will people ask him for fighting AJ?

People critizising canelo for his oposition are plain dumb. If every fighter did what canelo has been doing his whole career we would watch incredible fights.

Btw, the same guys critizising canelo hug not only gg's nuts but also bivol's or beterviev's; fighters who don't have a ****ing clue about what pushing their limits mean (Bivol's best win is canelo, LOL). Fighters who fought their entire careers in the same weight. Fighters who built their WHOLE careers beating fighters who will not be remembered in 5 years after they retire.

And you know what? There is every likelihood that Canelo will fight those LHW champions again (and imho he will lose again because he doesnt belong there) because that's the way canelo understands boxing.

Floyd has somehow garnered a TON of support from casual fans. Floyd was an ATG but he had even greatee matchmaking. Floyd somehow missed:

    Prime DLH
    Prime Mosley
    Prime Cotto
    Prime 2009 Manny
    Prime Tim Bradley
    Prime Paul Williams
    Prime Margarito

    Instead, Floyd fought:
    Ghost Guerrero
    Andre Berto
    Marcos Maidana (twice)
    Victor Ortiz
    Carlos Baldomir
    Old Sharmba Mitchell

Floyd's resume is unremarkable. Everyone was coincidentally too old and coming off losses or, in case of Canelo, too young and not yet seasoned

He refused to fight Benavidez and deserves criticism for that

Maidana and ODLH fights were not gifts they were competitive fights that Mayweather clearly won in the eyes of most fans.

The only controversial decision Mayweather had was Castillo 1 who he beat clearly in the rematch.

Canelo has had some of the most consistently bad scorecards in the modern era.

He's fought much more talented and accomplished fighter than Benavidez.

Floyd could have had Golovkin and swerved hard off that road. Despite some early hiccups, Canelo fought Golovkin 3 times. I think OP is making some good points.

    Have to agree there.

He did take the hard fights though in addition to the easy touches.

I assume that's not aimed as it doesn't relate to the post you quoted

I don’t care enough about Floyd to defend him, but moaning about other fighters receiving gift decisions while trying to make a pro-Canelo thread is hilarious

Canelo didn't fight Sergio Martinez which would have been huge. Lots of excuses to avoid this fight.

    So?

That doesn't mean he is entitled to duck a serious challenger

Didn't 36 year old Mayweather fight Canelo?
