I’ve seen several threads including this name, but nothing to speak of on boxrec or the internet at all for that matter. I get the sense it’s satirical, where did this originate and what’s the meaning behind it?
Tell me you don’t know about Boston Tom McMustache without saying you don’t know about Boston Tom McMustache.
I think I agreed to wrestle that guy once. He was past his prime but it was still a mistake on my part. The man had gained an enormous amount of weight after he retired from boxing. I am talking scale breaking HUGE! I am not 100% certain he was THE actual Tire Iron Jones, but he probably was. I am certain he was called Tire Something-or-Another, or, at the very least, Goodyear Something-or-Another. Anyway, he was GINORMOUS!
Not everyone makes it on Boxrec… some guys have hundreds of unlisted amateur fights and many pro ones don’t wind up there… look how incompetent the top kickboxers records are you can find film or fights not listed. “Tire Iron”is mentioned in some biographies, namely one of the Ali ones where he knocked down the great man in sparring. He was witnessed KOing Henry Cooper too and it’s mentioned in his bio - Stupid strong for his era, great left hook, ran an exhibition circuit along the east coast, never broke into the big time, started off street fighting like most boxers - At one time there was footage of him sparring Larry Holmes but that’s gone - only footage we had, he did well but I wasn’t overly impressed. He was more a tough guy than a boxer if that makes sense? @cross_trainer is the guy who has done the most research on “Tire Iron” Jones and might be able to help you.
“Young” Foreman and “Forum” Lyle are right behind those guys - “Sugar” Valuev however casts a shadow on all these mortals.
Every boxing fan would know his name had he not discovered his musical talent and left the ring. This content is protected
Some guys are actively kept off Boxrec by the “powers that be.” Rumor has it, the entire lineage of a title recently vanished.
