Tunney was better in every way than Sharkey, and Sharkey was neck and neck with Schmeling.

Agreed. People always call Holmes the most under-rated HW champ in history. I think it is Tunney personally.

    Hi Buddy.
Firstly welcome aboard, you have certainly hit the ground running, have enjoyed reading your posts thus far, already you show a wealth of knowledge, and a nice manner around the keyboard, good stuff, I share your opinion on Tunney, and have felt so for a long while, his mind set and utter belief in his fighting abilities were a large part of his success, allied with his quest for learning, they made him a formidable and resolute adversary, when word reached William Muldoon the commissioner of boxing at the time, that Tunney was about to take on Greb for the first time, he pleaded with Tunney not to take on the much more experienced and devilish middle weight, all to no avail such was Tunney's conviction, as we know Gene took a dreadful beating, yet still had the temerity to say to the unmarked Greb " you were the better man TONIGHT " the implication was obvious, and so it panned out over the next few years, on the fight itself rather like Damon Runyon's view the next day " Tunney walked into a hornets nest last night, and got damn nearly stung to death " like that.
    Stay safe Ney, chat soon.

Very kind, thanks to you. Always been kind of fascinated with Tunney myself, he’s such a unique figure in Boxing, & gets unfairly overshadowed in discussions of the greats. A very unusual man as the sport goes, & he paid a price in popularity for it, but he adds some interesting variety I think to the pack.

Great matchup, Tunney outclasses him, he’s a much bettter version of Sharkey.

I lean slightly towards Tunney, feel like he might be a little too quick-footed for Schmeling, too hard to catch clean with the right hand.
