The fact is that neither fought AB in his prime. Turning pro late, injuries, drawn out legal issues with a former promoter have robbed us of ever seeing a physically prime AB in the pro ranks. A 34 year old is not in his physical prime let alone a 39 year old with a suspect knee. AB becoming undisputed at such a late stage and after such a stalled career is a testament to how great he is and so well deserved. I'm really not sure who would have won in a prime Gvozdyk v Bivol fight, I lean towards Gvozdyk however if AB never existed either one of those fighters would have stood an excellent chance of becoming undisputed.
Nothing has changed. Gvozdyk was a better fighter than Bivol who had the misfortune of running into Beterbiev early into his title reign. Had Bivol ran into Beterbiev in that time frame he would have lost in much more lopsided fight.
This. AB has been on the decline since Covid. He's 39 years old. He would have never had any issues with Yarde in his prime. Would probably dispatch Callum Smith much quicker and brutally too.
There's so much crying going on now. The narrative was set for Beterbiev to lose and he went against it. a shame this achievement is being glossed over currently, but there was a lot of bellyaching after Calzaghe beat Hopkins as well and eventually people simmered down and accepted the decision. I think that will happen here as well. As for what happens next? The ball is in Arturs court. Is he nice enough to grant Bivol a rematch, move up to CW, retire? We'll see.
Gvozgyk was countered repeatedly by a swarmer. Punched repeatedly from out of range , which is why he got battered senseless. Legs and movement-stiff. Completely overrated fighter.
We've been AB fans for a long time. Haven't been this happy about a fight result in a very long time. But yes the narrative was all set. No one cared that AB was 39. No one cared that he was coming off a major knee surgery. No one cared that he's ruled the LHW division for 5 years. All that mattered was that Bivol was "the master boxer" with the "skillz" and he would expose the plodding Beterbiev as can crushing caveman. Well it didn't happen. He's old now so he can't go balls to the wall for 12 rounds anymore. So he outboxed the boxer FFS. It really doesn't get any better.
Is this a different way of saying “I know Beterbiev got lucky on the cards”? Of course Gvozdyk could beat Bivol with his jab, big right hand and longer reach. But if I had to bet, I’d bet on Bivol who has vastly superior legs, better hand speed, better combinations and more grit and determination.
bro wtf kind of weird victim complex crap is this? There were plenty of people rooting for and expecting a Beterbiev win… Fight was looked at as 50/50 by most, and for good reason…. there were also plenty of people mentioning his age and knee surgery….
This sounds like you're making excuses for Beterbiev getting a gift decision. Trying every which way to diminish Bivol so can feel better about yourself or something. This is such a weird take. The majority of this forum picked Beterbiev to win by KO. You expected him to easily KO Bivol. He couldn't do it and got outboxed for most of the fight and you were clearly let down so you're making up all kind of excuses to feel whatever that is you're feeling.
I agree 100%, but styles make fights, and because Gvozdyk was not quite as defensively sound as Bivol, and a far more stationary target, Beterbiev was able to wear him down. The elusiveness of Bivol thankfully also managed to take one of Beterbiev's most effective assets away from him, his dreaded rabbit punch.
Bivol's elusiveness is what prevented Beterbiev from scoring the stoppage. But Bivol's lack of power is what prevented him from winning the fight. Gvozdyk had the power to hurt Beterbiev and he did hurt Beterbiev. I saw much better ring generalship from Gvozdyk for the first 8 rounds or so than I saw from Bivol. For the first 8 rounds in that fight I never got the sense that Beterbiev was bullying Gvozdyk. Eventually the avalanche came, but Gvozdyk did much better against Beterbiev than a lot of people give him credit for. And this was a prime AB. Does a prime AB stop Bivol? I don't know. Maybe he does. Maybe he doesn't. But what I do know for certain is that a Beterbiev stoppage victory is definitely a viable outcome against Bivol had he been in his prime. A lot of people thought Bivol beat Beterbiev. Can make the argument with clean punching for sure. I'm not so sure that's an argument Beterbiev would allow anybody to make 5 years ago.
