Eddie Machen and Zora Folley were both killed by a gun, although Machen was thought to be suicide Zora had unknown reasons for his death, same for Arturo Gatti,Sonny Liston, and Alexis Arguello, all of them died odd deaths.
New York Times boxing writer Michael Katz once told me he had long been investigating a rumor/tip that Bert Cooper was Joe Frazier’s illegitimate son. Obviously he was never able to verify it.
People say that only because Cus was not married, and had no kids.... there is literally no evidence to that. Oh, he massaged Patterson´s feet... so what ? It was his fighter.
Not to be a nitpicker, but Zora died after hitting his head by a pool where he had slipped while he and some friends were wrestling and messing around. Machen died after falling out of a balcony window.
That McCall was being paid more to lose to Bruno than he would have got for winning and then fighting Tyson, as the big money fight was Bruno v Tyson, and McCall didn't really sell well in the States and was paid more to be competitive but lose to Frank. Sounds bollocks.. But I've heard it a few times
Speaking of Cooper, there was a story behind his fight w/ unbeaten TV fighter Richie Melito that he was expected to take a dive in that fight, but when it was learned that agents from the FBI were in attendance (who were investigating whether Melito was taking part in pre-arranged fights), Cooper bailed on the arrangement & flattened Melito w/ a legitimate effort. IDK whether the Cooper story is true, but it turned about Melito's fights were being investigated by the FBI & the people behind the fixes were eventually convicted.
Two pages and not a single mention of the theory that Richard Steele stopped the Chavez-Taylor fight due to his allegiance to Don King and his fighters? I am shocked.
1 of the biggest conspiracy theories in boxing is that mob figures fixed Jack Sharkey's title winning decision over Schmeling, which he was then required to repay by taking a dive vs. Carnera.
