Evening all, Long time lurker, first time poster. Thought I'd start with a 'contentious' thread, so here goes. Have you ever had a feeling, that you can't come up with a logical explaination to others about but you still think might be true? I had one of these feelings around Amir Khan that if he had got to fight Mayweather that he would have given him a lot more problems than people might think he could or even I myself could actually make a case for. I remember thinking that when Khan was calling him out (obviously for the payday) that he would never get the fight wether or not he deserved it (and there's a fair case for him not deserving it over others), and looking back I do remember getting the feeling that 'something' about fighting Khan kind of spooked Mayweather a little bit even though the outcome more than likely would have been a relatively easy Mayweather win anyway. Maybe it was purely the blistering hand speed that Khan still had at that point that just made Mayweather a bit 'off' about considering the fight, not that he thought he'd lose as such (there's no reason for him to think that), but maybe that he thought it was 'possible' that he might not be able to control the fight as he would like to and that something unexpected might just happen. Again, absolutely no logical reason I think this, just a feeling that's all. Either about the above or any other feelings you've had where you just 'feel' that a lesser fighter might have been the undoing of a better one?
Timing beats speed Floyd would have issues at his age around the time the fight was touted, but it's hard to imagine him not getting to khan at some stage Khan hasn't the wit or chin to beat Floyd, but he would win rounds early Oh and welcome to the forum
Thanks mate, good to be here. Completely agree with your assesment of what would have likely happened. I definitley think it would have been an interesting fight to see how each of them dealt with each other as the fight went on. Shame it never happened in the end.
That's one of the only things about boxing as a sport that can sometimes frustrate. There isn't really another sport where you have opposition in the same 'league' but never get to see them go up against each other.
I wouldn't he say he 'sucked' as such but I do agree he would get timed. As I said this is just a thought specific to me, nobody else on the planet may have thought the same (in fact they probably didn't ) and I can't even explain it logically. You must have looked at upcming fights and read what everybodies saying and thought to yourself "I'm probably on my own here, but I don't think this is going to pan out how everybody thinks it will" and then watched the fight and you've actually been right.
People fall in love with speed too much. Khan had great speed but was VERY predictable with his attacks. He didn't use feints or probes in his offense. He just relied on overwhelming you with speed. For people who follow baseball it's like a pitcher who throws 99 mph but that's all he has. Eventually hitters are going to time the pitch and hit it. Same thing here. Floyd would get Khan's timing down and dissect him. As far why they never fought, the best time would have been 2012 had Khan not lost to Peterson. That seemed like the fight that was going to happen next. Schaefer was even talking about it being Floyd's next fight. Khan losing killed it. Floyd fought Cotto instead.
I can't see past Mayweather knocking him out tbh. I definitely think Floyd has a harder time with Maidana then Khan
IMO The flow of the fight would resemble the Zab fight (without the craziness from the coaches). Khans hand and foot speed would trouble Mayweather briefly before he started getting timed and Floyd controlled and slowed the pace of the fight.
Khan was timed by far lesser boxers in Canelo and Danny Garcia. There's no doubt in my mind that Floyd also times Khan. Floyd doesnt stop anyone at 147 but he wouldve made Khan gunshy en route to a 9-3ish decision where Khan looked flashy for two rounds
That Peterson fight was a joke too. Fight took place in DC and that random guy walking around the ring talking to the judges and then the strange split decision for Peterson. Khan prolly shouldve gotten that win. Oh well. Cotto fight was better
