88 Tyson vs 92 Bowe

Tyson would force Bowe to fight inside, but Bowe tended to fight pretty well in close, and in particular had a nasty little uppercut he liked to employ in the trenches. At distance, Bowe could use his long reach, and it was always taller guys with a good jab who tended to give Mike his hardest fights before he began unraveling mentally. (See Buster Douglas, Jose Ribalta, Tony Tucker, Pinklon Thomas, et al).

I think it would be a harder fight than you guys expect, although both of these guys are inconsistent, so it would always depend on which version of Tyson and which version of Bowe showed up for the bout.

 

Tyson by KO. Bowe's lack of defense would be his undoing. You simply CAN'T take Tyson's shots for long and few fighters in history would have a hope of trading with prime Tyson and winning. Bowe is at his best against someone without a big punch and is willing to trade with him AKA Holyfield. Evander was tailormade for him, and if Tyson was landing on him not Holyfield it would have ended early.

Bowe's lack of defence is the difference.

Both men had great chins - I feel Tyson's is a little better, but that's not the point. Bowe was a big puncher, but he was more of a grind-you-down type IMO, especially in comparison to Tyson.

Anyways, in a shootout I'll happily favor the guy with better defense. A better chin, power, etc. is just gravy.

 

bowe told me personally tyson did not want to fight him. Thought I would share an opinion from an actual fighter.

I think Tyson would have fun flogging him until Bowe's corner stops the fight.

 

Bowe would get drawn into slugging sooner or later and this would spell the end, he didn't quite have the defence to stop the avalanche and stand toe to toe as he did vs Holyfield, in with a monstrous concussive puncher like Tyson. Proviing he comes out and elects to box early on he'd last through the mid-rounds, if he meets Tyson in ring-centre and takes the fight to him he'd get starched within three or four. I went for the former.


Ps: Bowe at his very best does a job on Dempsey and maybe Maciano, though.

How do you see see Bowe surviving Dempseys early charge? Bowe was durable as hell and tough, but his defense was leaky and against Dempsey that's a very dangerous weakness to have.

 

Bowe is bigger, stronger, a more powerful puncher and had at least as good an inside game (one of very best uppercuts in the divisions history). He could box too. Dempsey lasts until around the fifth when the ref stops the contest. Marciano does most things that bit better than Dempsey and was more durable so he'd last longer, say the 8th or 9th.

 

Maybe because he was locked up and didn't come back until 1995. When Tyson won a belt back, Bowe had already lost it.

 

Very hard to pick a winner here. Tyson achieved more but stylewise I like Bowe on his bets night. Tyson had more 'best nights' than Bowe though... If riddick uses that jab, then added to his inside work he wins... very close though.
