Mike Tyson vs Joe Louis

I think the Douglas fight showed that he had both.

Louis was floored by fighters who didn't have Tyson's speed, power or strength.

I don't see Tyson letting Louis off the hook once he had him in trouble.

Louis is the overall better fighter but using the terribly cliched' ,,"Styles make fights", term I think Joe's style plays to Tyson and he ko's Joe early. However, If Louis can keep him off , the longer the fight goes the worse it is for Mike. I just don't think that's as likely a scenario, not impossible but not likely. A real interesting matchup.

I agree. I got Tyson but if the mid rounds come and Joe still in it he pulls it out.

 

Mike had more of a glass mind but that was mostly later on in his career when boxing wasn't his focus.

Who is stronger mentally? I'll go with Louis.

Technically, I don't think Tyson would react well to Louis' heavy combinations.

 

I agree. Joe was so great at putting power punches into combination, though Mike was no slouch in that department.

I just see Mike ultimately getting overwhelmed.

 

Louis often leaned forward and blocked or sometimes just held his feet and didn’t even get his left hand up, instead of stepping back when an opponents opened up, which was exploited by Tami Mauriello, he feinted with the left to get Louis to react and because Louis held his feet and didn’t get his left hand up, he staggered him and in the first round at that.

For those who don’t know, Tyson would have much more success with this than Mauriello because, 1st off, he’s much bigger and secondly, he gets low better so he’d open Louis up for that right down the middle/over the top even more, that was one of Tyson’sbetter finishing moves and it was something Louis was susceptible to.

I don’t discount Louis if he can get out of the early rounds, but I think it’s more likely that Tyson takes advantage of the flat footedness of Louis and potentially finishes him with the sequence I mentioned, feint the left to get him to react in the way he sometimes does (holding his feet and leaning forward) Tyson gets low which will allow him to get more power and get Louis to drop that left even more than against Mauriello, then closes the distance and takes him out with the right follow up.

 

Right and also his fast start and fast firepower. Joe was a slow starting slow of foot methodical fighter. Joe goes in 1.
