Great post and point taken on the weight draining Chris did - a heavily boiled down fighter does have lowered punch resistance IMO and one aspect of such a match up is at what weight does the fight happen/what's Chris' weight on fight night?

In the context of walking blindly into a shot with your chin the opposite of tucked, I concede that JJ could catch a HW fighter more than likely. With taking the shot clean on the chin but seeing it coming, I do think the likes of Eubank, Hagler, Toney, LaMotta etc. eat the punch and survive.

the point that chris would never be in position to get hit like that is fair.

even if he was, i'd take his chin, maybe he'd be so f'd he'd lose the fight, but he wouldn't get ko'd.

Only maybe Hagler and LaMotta could've taken that shot.

I think Eubank's chin would have withstood it. I don't think Eubank is getting taken out by a single-shot from any Middleweight.

    SRR. Fullmer.Monzon. Tiger.
And then the list of guys Jackson would not land on. He couldn't get tate out of there. And we are talking thomas, not Frank.

I totally agree that it's very foolish (bordering on suicidal) for any fighter to leave their chin exposed against a puncher like Jackson, especially as there had already been warning signs when Jackson's punches had missed Graham's chin by a whisker.

But what I was asking was intended as a hypothetical question about whether a granite chin could withstand a punch like that.

I find it hard to believe that even a granite chinned fighter would not be knocked down by that punch.

I'd like to know what Eubank weighed when he stepped in the ring against Calzaghe.

The records show there was only a pound difference in their weights but Eubank definitely looked heavier and had originally been preparing for a light-heavyweight bout.

Was the left hook from Robinson that knocked out Fullmer harder than Jackson's right hand?

    I'm not so sure.

I think Fullmer would have been KO'd.

Well if you're taking out the context that the punch was landed in, which is what made it so instantly devastating, then of course they could. Jackson was a regular one-punch artist compared to quite a lot of other more effective great punchers, but most of the fighters he stopped were still able to soak up at least some big punches before they cracked. He landed some huge flush punches on McClellan that weren't able to stagger him, for instance.

That's not to say he wouldn't be capable at all of hurting, staggering or dropping even the most durable middleweights with a flush right hand bomb like that. Even if they saw it coming and were in a decent stance. But unless they were in a similar wide open, unaware position then the bet would be that they would endure it one way or the other. Graham himself might not have been knocked out instantly by one bomb if he'd taken it flush in a more aware, positionally responsible manner, he only really displayed a questionable chin after this fight.

Of the iron jaws mentioned, I reckon Fullmer is the one I think would be most likely to meet a similar fate if you put him that sort of unaware, careless charging in/chin up position. He was tough as nails, but did show visible discomfort and willingness to give ground quite a few times when he fought big punchers, and unlike the others, we've actually witnessed him be brutalised at 160 by one when he took a shot he wasn't at all expecting.

If I remember it right, all Graham had to do was survive the round and the title was his as they were going to stop the fight that round due to Jackson’s eye, which makes his tactics in that round that allowed him to take that specific punch all the more stupid.

That's right. Both fighters entered a clear decline after this bout, imo. Jackson's eye trouble was already an issue, but the sharp potshots and combinations he took here seemed to put the final nail in. He didn't have the same balance or consistent snap in his punches afterward.

Ring generalship was arguably Graham's biggest flaw to me, more so than being a fairly light puncher. He had a tendency to get frustrated/over-aggressive at times in his fights if he was having trouble landing or had taken a few unexpected flush counters, as well as having a liking for putting on a show for the fans at the expense of economy and responsibility. That's when the fighting with both hands at waist-level and taking huge risks while goading opponents into throwing punches schtick would go into overdrive. He usually kept that stuff for bullying and taunting overmatched British-title-level opposition, not fighters that were perceived as higher-level contenders going in, but for some reason decided to go all-in with it against McCallum. Maybe it was the excitement of a partisan home crowd cheering him in a long-awaited first world title fight, but imo it cost him that bout, along with doubling down and becoming more aggressive with it and willingly slugging it out more when it became clear circa 3rd/4th it was too dangerous to default to against someone of this level.

Always thought that from Graham's team's perspective they should have been pushing heavily for a rematch soon after rather than looking for another title fight elsewhere (and maybe they did, who knows for sure), as he was the one of the two that seemed to have more scope to adapt and get more out of his existing skillset; a more disciplined performance where he actually just gave McCallum the appropriate respect would have been a very hard fight to call.

Eubank Sr had a phenomenal chin, one of the best I’ve ever seen. I don’t see anyone in the MW division switching his lights off with one shot.

I don't know what Eubank weighed on fight night vs Calzaghe, but in his autobiography Calzaghe said he normally weighed 178-180lbs on fight night at SMW, but burnt so much nervous energy on the day of the Eubank fight, his first world title fight, that he was only 172lbs on the night.
