Who would you take in this battle of spheroidal behemoths?

Eric Esch was a sideshow sort of fighter Tony Galento was actually a professional boxer and contender I believe he was the number 1 contender at one point they aren’t close to the same.

Butterbean did rise up the ranks and eventually got a fight with Larry Holmes.

Not comparing legacies here just if they were to fight. Bean is damn near 400 lbs with an absolute cannon. And it's not like Tony was known for any real technical skills but the opposite.

Again Tony is a pro, whatever skills you think he lacked he used them to compete in over 100 professional fights… you don’t get that far without knowing wtf you’re doing he beat contenders and earned a title shot Eric Esch fought??? 50 something Holmes. If Butterbean was still around he’d be fighting Jake Paul he was a product.

People need to go back and look at Tony on film. Half of Butterbeans' opponents would beat him.

Is this some kind of a joke?
Galento would have murdered Butterbean in one round.

    Mismatch.

Butterbean was a curiosity who fought in four rounders.

Galento was the #1 Ring Magazine contender.

Whatever anybody tells you, being the #1 contender is a superb accomplishment, in any era.

There is no reason to mention them in the same sentence.

The results that he obtained in the ring show that they almost certainly wouldn't.

The man was the #1 contender, in an era where Joe Louis is the champion, and the top five contained Schmeling, Pastor, Nova nd Farr.

Anybody who is even comparing him to Butterbean, doesn't understand what they are talking about.

Literally the only similarity between them is that they were both fat.

Tell me more... @Pat M , you do excellent breakdowns of fighters. What do you see here from this guy falling into his jab and chicken-winging from the hip?

Nat Fleischer and his minions ranked this guy #1? If this guy was ranked #1 by The Ring, it's a reminder of why I don't check rankings or care who The Ring, WBA, WBC, etc. ranks. As Seamus mentioned, many of Butterbean's opponents could also beat Galento.

This … Galento was not historically elite but damn, people act like he was just absolutely nothing.

    He would have destroyed Butterbean.

I’ll go you one better: Butterbean would not have seen the second round against Jim Braddock. The dude was a carny freak.
