Apologies if he’s already been mentioned but old mate Johnny Famechon deserves to be part of the discussion.

 

Julio deserves a mention. During his prime, he always found that spot after his opponent threw.

Duran, Sanchez, Holyfield, Toney, Mayweather

 

Duràn's counters is one of the few factors of how did his power translate so well from lightweight to super middleweight,if Duràn was able to rock Paz to the ropes with that 2nd knockdown shot and follow up,he might stop Paz.

 

Canelo Alvarez is a masterful counter-puncher.

While probably not in contention for best counter-punchers ever, Yoko Gushiken, Naoya Inoue, and Yuri Arbachakov all have very underrated counter games imo. Yuri's overhand right counter to the jab is a thing of beauty, he caught Kittikasem with a textbook example of it in their first fight, which I mentally replay all the time.

The answer is Jose Napoles who might be the best filmed fighter of all time - retired about 49 years ago.

 

Seeing Benitez and Locche here is weird to me because they were hard to hit but countering wasn’t there first response at all, they prioritised evasion over all of it which is why they were good at not being punched… but it comes at a cost.

 

I reckon our list would look similar for more modern guys… Toney, JCC Snr and McGirt? Top 3 off the top of my head.
