Peak Cleveland Williams vs. Bob Satterfield

Yeah that's fair. Id counter this by saying that Satterfield already looks like a child next to him, what good would 10 lbs more make, help him last two rounds more?

 

Compare his shoulder to Satterfield's glove wrapped fist....
What were they feeding that guy down in Texas?

 

A more developed Williams likely had more power to put into his punches, and most likely learned much better technique with experience to maximize that power.

Everything is bigger in Texas as they say - including the psychiatric hospitals, lol.

Williams was def. an outlier in terms of natural frame and born muscle. He had huge fists also and shoulder width that only Max Baer could rival.

In a number of ways, his physique was that much more impressive and exuded more power than Ken Norton’s, imo.

 

I’ve seen this photo before of Williams without the year or context provided.

I’ll be honest, I might’ve been inclined to link this to illustrate a more slender version of an apparently much younger Williams.

However, the description here suggests that it’s 1963 - Williams prepping for his bout against Young Jack Johnson. Boxrec lists Williams as being 213 lbs for that fight.

Perhaps it comes down the angle of the photo but damn, Cleve appears quite slender in this shot: -

It's difficult to assess how much he did (or didn't) improve after the Satterfield loss w/o seeing footage of him from that time period IMO.

Regardless of any increase in size &/or durability, Williams always had a disregard for defense. I wouldn't be surprised if Satterfield could still beat even a more mature Williams in a similar fashion as he did to Nino Valdes:

Satterfield was 5"10 weighed about 180 but he exposed Big Cat with a terrific KO in round 3 - Big Cat was flattened and remember Big Cat was 35-1-1, that was 6/22/54 Satterfield also KO'd Bob Baker top Heavyweight contender who was 30-2-1 in 1 round on 7/01/53 meanwhile Ezzard Charles took out Bob Satterfield in 2 rounds after a rugged 1st round on 1/13/54. On 8/17/55 Bob dominated Nino Valdes and dropped Nino in the last round for a 9 count. I think Bob beats any version of Big Cat even though Bob could be erratic- He beat the Big slow guys but lost to Archie Moore and Ezzard

 

No doubt, Cleveland was green, but at the same time Bob was 20 and well over fifty fights in.
