Mauro is really the only commentator on Showtime/PBC that's somewhat entertaining to hear no matter how cringe he can be. Everyone else, besides Al Bernstein, is flat.

Great Quarry quote about Duran! I remember that one. Another quote I like about a Duran fight was Gil Clancy who said" Duran is taking Davy Moore apart"!

Quarry perfectly summed the best and perhaps only way to fight the lightweight Duran.

Another witty/hilarious line that comes to mind:

Tex Cobb commentating on Chavez vs Ruben Castillo:

"I'm surprised these boys aren't cut to ribbons. You can tell they ain't White!"

Reg Gutteridge had loads of quotable:

On Hearns-Leonard 2: ‘It’s like watching Bambi getting mugged’

On Hagler for the Hagler-Hearns fight: ‘He’s always been mean, moody and a bit magnificent’.

The replay of Hearns getting knocked down by Hagler: ‘It’s like watching Bambi on roller skates’

Larry Merchant, whatever you think about him, had some great quotable lines which were always well timed.

I remember Harold Lederman reading out the scores at the beginning of the fourth round of Trinidad-Vargas as Trinidad got put on the floor - cue Merchant: ‘Whatever score you had Harold, it just changed.’

Larry Merchant “If he gets up, he probably wins the fight”

Jim Lampley “Unbelievable! Unbelievable! Richard Steele stopped the fight with fewer than five seconds to go! You’re gonna watch Lou Duva go crazy now! You’re gonna watch Lou Duva go absolutely berserk!”

“What’s wrong with his other eye?”

Marvin Hagler when John Mugabi turned and quit on Duane Thomas after catching a thumb to the eye that fractured his orbital bone.

Marvin didn’t have a sympathetic bone in his body.

Quarry also sang the national anthem before that Duran fight.

They were fighting at thee Fountainbleu hotel in Miami, in an outdoor arena set up on the tennis courts. Quarry was on TV color commentary. The ring announcer asked everyone to stand for the national anthem and … there was no one there to sing it. Nor any audio recording queued up.

Everyone stood for a bit and .. nothing.

Jerry climbed in the ring, took the mic from the announcer and sang it. Not sure if he was on key, but he got all the words right.

    True renaissance man.
