The difference here would be the war of attrition. Willard wouldn't be able to just whittle down Johnson as easily and his jab wouldn't be hitting a younger version as often.
Johnson could have survived and won a decision, and if Willard forced the fight while being behind, he'd run the risk of gassing himself out.

It's possible that a prime Johnson might've had difficulties trying to see Willard off. If Johnson couldn't do same, then his success or lack therefore would come down to the duration of the pre-scheduled limit. I think prime Johnson would be good for a clear win over 25 rounds but perhaps every round thereafter the fight begins to slowly tip toward Jesses' favor.

Top thread subject yet again from you Ferg.

For me, perhaps a subplot to the subject is how much do people draw from the material conquest of the older fighter in drawing their conclusion as to how a prime vs prime match might’ve gone?

For example, I think prime Holmes beats prime Tyson. Just imo.

However, and I could be wrong, but it seems that many might “overdraw” from Mike’s actual defeat of Holmes in forming their conclusion that Mike also beats prime Larry.

Holmes’ susceptibility to right hands is also called into the equation - but against a prime Mike, I think an equally prime Holmes would be acutely aware and extremely avoidant of getting caught by Mike’s right hand - doesn’t mean for sure he doesn’t get caught but young Larry also had greater resilience.

Sadly, sometimes the later defeats of older fighters can be so comprehensive as to mislead as to how it might’ve gone down when they were younger.

In terms of rounds won - Tunney absolutely routed Dempsey but then, a Dempsey without the prime hand speed and leg mobility became a so much less effective fighter.

Bouts that Jack might’ve won in 1-4 rounds in his prime later becoming drawn out boxing matches - and there is no question that Tunney was far more boxer, per se, than Dempsey - so older Dempsey was very much confined to Tunney’s choice domain.

So, just imo again, an absolutely prime Dempsey could arguably see Gene off in < 4 rounds, Gene’s superior boxing abilities otherwise becoming a moot point.

Prime Ali easily beats Holmes any and every time they would have fought. Even the later version, particularly on the night he fought Foreman, would have given Holmes a whipping like his was his daddy… No fighter before or since could have beaten Ali on that night!!

I am confident that Zaire Ali beats prime Holmes but it would n't have been easy.

    Thanks pug appreciate it.
It's a tough one sometimes seeing an older Fighter getting beaten by the latest star, can't help but think that the younger version beats his ass.

Johnson was actually beating Willard at the time of the KO.
A prime Johnson would rough him up over the distance imo.

    Willie Pep-Sandy Saddler

I think Saddler´s would always give Pep problems but I believe Pep´s peak was before his 1st loss to Sandy especially since he suffered injuries from a plane crash a year before Saddler 4 round ko of Pep.

Shame there´s no footage of Pep (that I know of) from the early forties.

I think Bernard would have convincingly won against Joe Smith Jr if he was just a few years younger.
