Tyson Fury - End of an Era?

If we count Fury's title defenses; The "Era of Fury" looks even more disastrous:
1. Wilder
2. White
3. Chisora
4. Ngannou (a fight that was not for the WBC belt, and a fight that Fury may have lost).

P.S.S. Imho Fury has exploited the "Lineal HW Champion title" more than anyone in heavyweight history.
As long as he is not justly defeated by the better in the ring.
Title defenses don't rank Fury highly on ATG, but that could change with a Fury win in a few days.
We are witnessing HW ATG history, if Usyk loses.
If Fury loses we witness HW history with Usyka in the lead role.
Trilogy winner Fury Vs. Usyk should be in TOP 10 ATG HW.

 

ive been watching all the eras live since "thrilla in manila". imo, the competition at hw the last ten years has been the weakest of any previous 10 year period i can think of. its been entertaining in spots, and their limitations make the outcomes less predictable and more dramatic. but as far as actual talent goes, its been weak.
i remember arguing with kids on here ten years ago when they told me the small hw of the past would never be able to compete with the giants of the day. the klits, the furys, the joshuas, etc... i assured them a man no bigger than ali would come around to clean up all the garbage. to be honest, i didnt expect it to be usyk...but here we are.

The level of conditioning etc these guys had to fight wars for 15 rounds etc was insane

You mention the thrills, now that was a fight between two aging greats, who just went to war for 14 rounds, like literally war

I admit my trolling of usyk not being great is a little much, but when fans claim he is the absolute goat for beating these lumps, it just disrespects the memory of the greats from before

There where many fighters in the 80s way more skilled than what we see today. The fact that chisora is still making noise shows the lack of depth

It's a double edge sword with usyk. He proves his greatness by beating these monsters, but then again, maybe they just aren't that great and who is to say, Ali, Foreman, Holmes, Tyson etc wouldn't do the same

 

There is no hope for Usyk: Teddy Atlas picks him to win. Sad.

 

Some era it turned out to be. Makes the 2000's look like the 70's.

 

It's comments like this that make me smile.

Tbf a lot of people are only jumping on the Usyk bandwagon because he won the first one, as is often the case for most observers.

 

I'm sure it will be looked back upon very fondly...

Usyk is a ****'s hair off being 38 years old.
Ngannou was a 37-year-old debutant coming off knee surgery.
Chisora was nearly 39.
Whyte was the youngest ranked opponent at 34 years old.
Then you have wins over Wilder aged 34 and then pushing-36.
He got a draw with 33-year-old Wilder.
With the Fury Era officially beginning with his win over 39-year-old Wlad.

So...that is two ranked wins over opponents not on the wrong side of 35 (and none of them in their prime)... What an era!

 

This should really be considered the end of the Usyk era. Usyk has now spent half his pro career in the Heavyweight division. Fury/Wilder/Joshua was the transitional era until Usyk's arrival.

As a pro, Usyk spent 5 years at Cruiserweight, and he has now spent 5 years at heavyweight. In those 5 years at heavyweight, he beat the two top dogs in Joshua and Fury to collect the belts and become undisputed, and also put the marker down against one of the top heavyweights of the next generation in Dubois.

No matter the result on Saturday, this is the end of the Usyk era; Fury/Wilder/Joshua were just keeping the throne warm until the music stopped.

 

He mostly only fights once a year. 5 heavyweight fights (soon to be 6) isn't exactly an era. He's come halfway into this era tbh.

 

Great video. To me, you hit it at 4:12. To me, Usyk was always the shadow member of the quartet when he was dominating the cruisers, because his fans who knew about him and turned me on to him early pointed out that he had already beaten some of the biggest men and hardest punchers in the world in the amateurs and WSB. Some of us were waiting all along...

 

We are all going to have our opinions, and only time will settle how this era is viewed by the ages, but I think it was a hell of a ride.

 

Fury's resume sucks, out boxed Klit was good but he was 40 year old and Fury denied him the rematch and then fought Wilder 3 times who potentially was never any good.. if he then loses 2 in a row against Usyk there will be question marks.

 

hmm... maybe we should call it the Inactive Era, instead. He would fit in well there. Afterall, Usyk's own inactivity was also tied to that of Fury and Joshua

 

I dont know Daniel Dubious, Kabayel, Johnny Fisher, Moses Itauma, Jalalov etc. Never know who else will come up. You could be right, but I wouldnt be so confident in the next era being bad.

 

It is the end of an era and it is a little bittersweat
