But Liston fought younger, better versions of those opponents, (Williams and Folley)

The only thing in his favour really, and and that he beat a somewhat fresher Patterson. But Ali otherwise beat more ranked contenders (including Terrell who beat Folley) and Liston twice. It's a very easy choice.

seemingly Ali outclasses Liston but Liston looked more impressive. He was not threatened by rivals like Doug Jones or Cooper, and he also destroyed much stronger versions of Patterson, Williams and Folley. Contrary to appearances, Clay's first fight with the injured Liston was quite competitive, and the second one was too strange to be considered significant. In my opinion, betting on Liston is not a mistake, although I don't think anyone would
he agreed to me. I noticed that most people think very schematically and style and sports level mean little to them, it's always easier to just rely on Wikipedia and it tells us that Ali definitely

When one competitor is on one side of the biggest upsets in sports history and the other competitor is on the other side of it...

Ali took the title out of mothballs after recovering from his inguinal hernia and produced ten HW Championship wins in three different nations during the decade. No contest.

Two votes for Liston.... How did they reach that conclusion?

Since the question in the poll is CV I can't help but seeing this as a job interview:

"So Mr. Ali, I see here that you had 19 straight victories, two of them over top 5 contenders, before challenging for the title. You won it against one of the most feared fighters in HW history in one of the biggest upset in HW history. You then cleaned out the rest of the top 10, bar Eddie Machen, in nine defences of your title."

    "Yes, I sure did that."

"Mr. Liston, I see on your CV that you beat four top 5 ranked in the year 1960 alone."

    "Yes, that is correct."

"And then knocked out the two time HW champion Floyd Patterson twice. Very impressive indeed."

    "Thank you."

"Yes, your CV is really head and shoulders above that of every other applicant, except one." Looks at the CV again. "But I see there's no information on what you did then. Why is that?"

    "Eeerrrr."

Now three. Thought people inclined to do so would be busy chasing UFO:s in NJ right now.

Yeah Ali went undefeated in the 60s and racked up 10 title wins including scalps over Liston and the best contenders around. This is a no brainer for me

Ali scored the biggest win(s) between the 2 (vs. Liston) & has an overall deeper/more numerous set of wins. I don't see much, if any case for Liston.
