It depends ... he is not rated over Hagler or Leonard as an all time great ... I think he is regarded as a terrific, dangerous fighter but not the very top all time great that Leonard or Marvin is ... it's tough when you were KO'ed in your two biggest fights, especially the way he was carried out v.s. Marvin ..

 

Well he did beat Duran, Benitez, Hill and I felt he avenged the Leonard loss and won titles in five weights. So I feel his achievements do overcome those two failures.

 

Hearns is an undenialbe all time great. The wins over Cuevas, Benitez, Duran, Hill, and that phony draw against Leonard confirm it all over the place.

 

Agreed. Anyone that doesn't believe he won the 2nd Leonard fight is blind.

 

Hearns had a great career but those 2 loses do cast a pretty long shadow when it comes to his ATG ranking.

 

Put it this way, had he won them, we'd be talking top 5 p4p. But even considering those two losses, he's still high on the ATG rankings.

 

Exactly. A good description is that he won 5 of his biggest 7 fights ever.

Hearns' loss to SRL doesn't hurt him all that much, in my eyes. Sure, he lost, but he looked damn good in doing it.

Hagler beat him, but Hagler was bigger than him...so it can be argued that 160 Hearns was not as good as 147 or 154 Hearns.

He won the second Leonard fight clearly IMO.

Should he be below Leonard on a P4P list? Yes

Should he be below Hagler on a P4P list? IMO no.

 

Great fighter. Imo along with McCallum the best jmw ever, great at ww and very good at mw.
But the "worst" of the fab 4 when it comes to all-time greatness. And like all of them slightly overrated in h2h terms.

 

Tommy's career is more than two fights. The Hagler and LeonardI fights are only a some of the part of his career. But even if you have issue with that, Hearns achieved personal redemption in LeonardII.

The Motor City Cobra's career cannot be summed up in two fights, he was far, far better than that.

Personally, I feel the two losses to Barkley hurt him a lot more than Leonard or Hagler, because Leonard and Hagler are the two best of the era, and Tommy put forth a great effort in both bouts, where as Barkley was just a solid fighter but nothing special, so Hearns going 0-2 against the Blade takes away something IMO.

I rank him somewhere from 35-40 personally on an all-time list.
