You've probably noticed that the smaller the guys, the greater their stamina and pace. Flyweight are usually a lot more active than heavyweights.

Usyk being so much smaller than most heavyweights, it's no miracle that his stamina is better. However, it's coming at the cost of being so much smaller. In most cases the big guy beats the small guy, despite stamina. Put a flyweight against a middleweight and stamina shouldn't mean ****.

Only because Usyk is so good can he actually take the fight to a point where stamina matters.

Guys like Wlad, Valuev, and other giants usually lacked in the stamina department but they still dominated small guys.

If stamina was such a big thing, more small guys would dominate buy we know that the big boys usually win. That's what makes Usyk such a phenomenon.

He was the same at cruiser though. His style is heavily dependent on stamina. The only person comparable is calzaghe imo. Constant movement and aggression. Yeah at heavy, size also is a component

Could say the same thing about his chin honestly.

If it wasn’t for his elite stamina he would have lost… Maybe sure. You know who else you could say that exact thing about? Rocky Marciano.

But yes Usyk does have elite stamina. And just think, it was even better at cruiser. :eeek:

Yes but his chin isn't as tested as eg vitalis was Vs Lewis. And he doesn't rely on it as much as he does his insane stamina

That's like saying that Foreman would never have been champion without his power, or Carl Froch would have been average without his granite chin.

Not sure what the point is - a fighter is a sum of their attributes!

    It's a good point.
I've always said if you took away a person's best characteristic they wouldn't be nearly as effective in their respective field.

It’s more than just stamina from Usyk. It’s his ring IQ, boxing skills, defense, footwork, versatility, combinations, chin, toughness, heart and will that wins him fights.

From what it sounds like you don’t seem all that impressed with Usyk’s overall skills and you only think that he just solely relies on throwing more punches to win which is completely not true.

Comparing the skills between Toney and Usyk I personally think Usyk is the superior technician. I love Toney’s style but I don’t think he’s as well rounded a fighter.

Fighters like Marciano, Ali, Duran and Pac were previously mentioned AS IF to make the case that Usyk’s reliance on stamina is disproportionate to that of previous greats.

    Hardly.

Those fighters actually make the case for Usyk’s reliance on stamina NOT being so disproportionate or out of step as compared to many past greats.

Throw in guys like Ray Robinson and Harry Greb (particularly so) also.

Duran’s greatest victory (vs SRL, fight 1) was absolutely underscored by Roberto’s superb conditioning and relentless pressure fuelled by incredible stamina

Usyk has slowed down at any rate, his boxing smarts coming to the fore more and more, as and when necessary - or even boxing smarts that he has always shown but given his many other, various attributes, boxing smarts that some have apparently missed.

For one thing, Usyk’s highly intelligent defensive manoeuvres in the fight just gone vs Fury were particularly notable.

Usyk lives the pro athlete life style, do you think he would have such elite stamina if he led 'Greedy Belly' life?

It is ok still being fit to fight in the championship rounds, but you need to have the skills to make use of, Usyk has these in abundance

Usyks mindset plays a big part in his success, mentally tough and able to change tactics.

Usyks stamina is but one tool in his extensive tool kit.

Without his power, Mike Tyson wouldn't have had so many KOs. Usyk's stamina is elite, and that is a key trait of almost any great boxer. Usyk also has a great chin, reflexes, footwork, IQ, and heart.

He has decent power but does not throw with full power in a situation where he can get countered. Watch his KO over Bellew.

That was what made Calzaghe a very difficult boxer to beat h2h all time.
