Oh no doubt McCallum had good power. But if you look at his phenomenal knockout record at junior middle, you'd have thought he was a devastating puncher, which he was not.
There's no way I would consider Hopkins a weak puncher. He's a very good body puncher and had above average pop at middleweight. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScRv9xzLeW8&NR=1
I think people (mis)conceive of Pep as a light-puncher b/c of the way Saddler just stormed thru his best punches. in actuality, he had a number of notable KO/stoppage wins over ranked fighters throughout his career.
And I could name 15 fighters off the top of my head….who were better body punchers than Mike Mccallum
Vitali was not a special puncher and he has an impressive KO ratio, higher than quite a few heavyweights who punched harder than him...
LaMar Clark with 43 W - 42 KOs 3L He also holds the record for most consecutive knockout wins in Boxing History. But 99% of his opponents were below amateur level. So his punching power cannot really be estimated and never will be. He lost his last fight against a very young Muhammad Ali.
Chris John, from memory was actually a puncher in his early career, then after he split up with his second trainer and got a new one,he started to become the crafty boxer we knew today
Tommy Hearns. Could not break a paper bag as an amateur and was the same as a pro-especially at welter and light-middle. Never stopped any decent fighter at all - the ****ing can.
