For me it was when BHOP took Tit's Puerto Rican flag and threw it on the ground. BHOP said he did it on purpose to put even more weight on Tito's shoulders going into their fight. "I knew he was training in Puerto Rico, and every Puerto Rican was telling him that he better kill me" remarked Hopkins.
Carlos Palomino told the tale of how Roberto Duran got the prefight edge with him. Carlos had heard about Duran trying to intimidate opponents at weigh-ins and such, acting like an animal and pushing/shoving or trying to get at the opponent. So Palomino got himself all psyched up — if Duran tried anything he was going to throw fists and go at Roberto with even more ferocity than Duran came at him. Instead of pulling away, he was going to jump right into the fray and let Duran know he wasn’t afraid and was ready to fight right then and there. So Duran stepped of the scale and came right over to him. Palomino tensed up and prepared for the worst … and Duran broke out in a big smile and shook his hand and told Carlos that he was Roberto’s son’s favorite fighter and asked if he could get an autograph for him. Carlos said he completely deflated and knew he had lost the mental battle right then. His edge completely went away and he left thinking ‘wow, what a nice guy.’ Of course Duran put on a masterclass to beat Carlos over 10 rounds. I doubt it would have gone any different no matter what, but I 100% believe that Roberto put the reverse psychology on him as part of his own psy ops.
Liston v anyone. Especially Patterson. Even Ali addmitted shitting himself when the monster made his way to the ring for the first fight.
Ah,I see. My another pick is how Duran threatened Leonard's family on their first fight,I know Duran still fought Leonard on their best(yeah,he mostly got on his bicycle as plan b/early round showboat),but that perhaps affected Leonard good.
Tyson v. Spinks Butch Lewis (Spinks' manager) ordered Tyson to rewrap his hands and this infuriated Tyson to the point where he punches holes in his dressing room's wall, which Spinks heard and detrimented him as he entered the ring to some Kenny Loggins song, which as soon as he goes through the ropes and looks at the crowd, transitions into Tyson's entrance which was a compilation of what I can make to be metals and chains clanging along with some ominous buzzing/humming sound which struck Spinks' nerves. The rest is history.
Mayorga grabbing the ass of DLH's wife. And Mayorga threatening Shane Mosely in Spanish which Mosely doesn't speak. Both attempts at intimidation worked out very badly for the presumed intimidator.
Great call. Not to make any excuses for George, but that would’ve been very tough to deal with. And, trapped in Zaire, George was forced to endure all the TALK for an extra month longer while his cut eye healed. George did say he wasn’t too thrilled about the Ali Bomaye (kill him) chant. I don’t imagine that too many fighters would’ve been.
Tarver’s “What’s your excuse gonna be tonight Roy?!!” (perhaps not verbatim) has to be right up there among the very best psyche jobs. Talk about a beautifully timed, 11th hour psychological hit just before first bell.
What about Fury dressed in a totally crap Batman costume beating up an equally s**t Joker? Vlad looked totally bamboozled. One of the funniest things in boxing that I have ever seen!
