Second best heavyweight of an era, dethroned Deontay Wilder, was the beginning of the end for Wladimir Klitschko. Fought a good couple fights against Usyk. Probably an underachiever given his talent and skill level, which seems insane with how much he has achieved, all things considered. Edit: His getting up from the last knockdown against Wilder in the first fight will likely go down as a legendary moment in boxing.
His the second best based on what?? That guy did gaslight the public about his size and he lost when it mattered the most to a man he called a middleweight twice.
A win over Klitchko is his only great win so far. Wilder was never so good. If he goes and win against Joshua and Dubois then I can say that his legacy is good.
It's a sensible time to have this discussion now that the picture is more clear. I think he is \ was a very good HW who engaged in the exciting trilogy with Wilder and defeated an ageing Klitschko. He was, on his day, capable of giving anyone an interesting night. And came back from a long hiatus - not easy at all to do. HOWEVER he fell well short of the claims he (and some others made) about being the best HW ever, and even of his own generation. And this gaslighting was made worse by the fact that there was so much hype, yet he seemed unwilling to back it up on many occasions. In summary I think I will view him as a bit of a wasted talent. He probably was capable of more, but seemed happier wearing the crown than really defending it in a historically meaningful way. His resume is fairy thin for a person involved (previously) in ATG discussions. You can't claim to be the best ever, while simultaneously taking on Chisora 3 and Ngannou when there are a slew of legitimate fighters out there to help you build your legacy. Fury is ultimately a cautionary tale, a man who had it all and, to an extent, blew it ... Walk the walk as well as talk the talk or, ultimately, the public will eventually see that the emperor indeed is not wearing any clothes.
A lot of people beat Klitschko and Deontay Wilder before him, huh? Who’s second best then? AJ who also “lost when it mattered most” and who’s best win is semi-retired Klitschko two years after Fury beat him? Or DuBois who’s beaten a couple of never was/no hopers and a completely compromised AJ? Fair assessment!
He has a fantastic legacy. Dethroned Wlad, came back from depression and obesity to beat Wilder. A good performance in an undisputed fight against Usyk. He's not the best ever but he can be proud of what he achieved. The Wilder trilogy will be very memorable in years to come.
The difference [between me and Klitschko] is that he's been made to look like that. Everything that I do is natural, off the cuff. Nobody tells me what to do, nobody sticks a key in my back and turns it. I do it myself. I wake up in the morning and do what I want to do, because I'm my own man. And when it comes to that night, they'll have the most charismatic, the most colourful, the most controversial champion since Muhammad Ali. And that's what the world's been waiting for. If I'm not the man to fill those boots, they'll be waiting a hell of a lot time more. Because all I see is robots, people being turned and told what to say. The world needs me to change the landscape of the division. This content is protected This content is protected Top 5 boxing moment of all time
He also showed that actual giants can be quite athletic, which is a scary proposition for the future. A 280lb man should not be able to move as fluidly, or keep up such a work rate. Whats next, a 7ft1 310lb world champion?
Usyk has swept him into the dustbin of boxing history. If and that's IF he fights AJ he may regain some acclaim. However his rise from the dead in Wilder I will forever be talked about and seen on youtube.
His legacy is that of a reasonably talented behemoth who made very few defenses, and, lost twice to a man 50 pounds lighter than he was. I rate his win over Klitschko just slightly higher than Holmes' win over Ali. I rate his series with Wilder slightly lower than Holmes' series with Shavers. After that, there is really no meat on the bone. He fought in a mediocre era, and didn't fight on a regular basis. He never even fought Joshua, and almost lost to an MMA fighter who had zero boxing matches to his credit, and, was subsequently destroyed by Joshua. He was better than one would expect at first glance, but, ultimately not an ATG. He was also clearly a PED cheat. I find his reign totally underwhelming.
AJ is a bum who got chinned by a midget called Ruiz on 3 weeks notice. Bricked himself against Dubious and got chinned. Dominated by Usyk. Fury would never lose to Dubious or Ruiz. AJ is a bodybuilding protected bum. Gifted every belt and medal. Never beat a reigning champion.
