Not in terms of skill or style or anything like that. I was just trying to think of a guy, another Heavyweight from any era with such longevity. He’s still getting good fights this late in his career. Years after many of us thought he was completely washed. I mean the guy fought Klitschko for the WBC Strap back in 2012!!! Riding a two fight win streak over Washington and Joyce and heading into a clash with Wallin.
Yeah he was an upset guy for sure, but he was never a title challenger nor was he a headliner. I’m racking my brain, I don’t know that there’s ever been anyone like him, Chisora.
Francois Botha. Had his pro debut in 1990, proceeded to fight Tyson, Lewis, Moorer and Wlad Klitschko from the mid 90's to the early 2000's, retired for a few years, came back and fought the corpses of Holyfield and Grant, and then later Carlos Takam and Joseph Parker.
Maybe Joe Bugner? Fought Ali & Frazier in the 70s, later went on to beat some ex-champs from the 80s & had a big showdown w/ Bruno. Lee Savold floated in & out of HW rankings from the 1930s until he finished his career w/ fights vs. Joe Louis & Marciano in the early 50s.
So you're just looking for HWs who fought into old age and still got good fights when they were old? Evander Holyfield, Larry Holmes, and George Foreman are three obvious ones. Holyfield and Holmes get extra credit here because they kept on getting to challenge for titles even in their late 40s. Are are you looking for non-title holders who maintained a good career into old age?
chisora is a tough man. i'm still mad he didn't turn up for fury 1 ready to fight. after that he became a lot more proffesional and made a lot of money.
Bugner was who I was thinking of, I still need to watch more of those comeback fights of his. It just seems miraculous that a fighter who battled pretty good versions of Ali, Frazier, Foster, and other 70s staples would get back in the ring and beat versions of guys like Tillis, Bey and Page.
This is good one, though Botha did hold a strap briefly. Beating Axel but then being stripped, great comparison. Not quite loved like Chisora but that comes with how much the Brits have been a force in boxing of late.
Yeah, I was thinking non-champion, contender types. You can understand the former champs going on based on their name value alone, but Chisora still sells in the UK for sure.
