Recently read this from Twitter. Very sad to hear and hopefully Donald Curry gets all the help he can get. This content is protected
Sad stuff, In the pros that damage seems to always leave a mark for life…. Man Donald was an animal, technically just ran over guys, a mechanically sound guy who was just overall really, really good everywhere he was a talented fighter who worked hard on his skill set… he did sadly only have a short prime, I’m not sure what happened, wish we could’ve seen him fight Hagler.
Very sad to hear about any boxer but a little worse because Curry always seemed like a good guy. It is long term situations like this and sudden traumas like the recent death of cruiserweight Paul Bamba which bring the dangers of boxing home. It's why I get frustrated and a bit angry when I hear or read about boxers being called tomato cans, bums and the like. They are all putting their lives on the line for our entertainment and they should be appreciated.
I remember before he lost shockingly to Honeyghan, he seemed like he was destined for Superstardom. I think back in the 90's he was arrested and did a prison sentence. I remember watching him on the way up, he seemed very likeable and intelligent along with being a great fighter. Don't know what happened?
A damn shame. I remember seeing an interview of his a bit ago with him talking real poorly, and it just made me sad to see a dude who used to be so slick just get to that point in life. I hope that it won't be too rough on him.
Curry's amateur record was 396-4. That is not only an insane amount of fights but just crazy that he only lost four times as an amateur. Keep in mind, that is late 70's and early 80's which was when the US amateur program was at it's peak. There were gyms everywhere in the inner cities and everyone wanted to be Ray Leonard. I'm sure on top of all of those amateur fights, he fought a bunch of smokers that didn't get counted and likely sparred hundreds upon hundreds of rounds. Sad to see the toll he is paying now.
Really sadden reading this. Curry was a terrific fighter. As much as I like Honeyghan (and his performance against Curry was exceptional) he was lucky than the Lone Star Cobra had been struggling with weight for some time. Shame he hadn´t moved up earlier and a bigger shame he didn´t see McCallum left hook but though Curry still scored some solid wins over Gianfranco Rosi, Brett Lally and Lupe Aquino he was never the same after losing to Lloyd. Will never forget his destruction of Milton McCrory and his punch perfect win over Colin Jones . I wish him and his family all the luck in the World.
Terrible news mate,I wish him to get better and all his family a better luck. He was the definition of a shooting star back then,he came and shines thru the atmospheres, then fall out into nowhere.
