Only using fighters who didn't win the title. (WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO are the only ones that count) Counter punching : Jerry Quarry Body punching: Gerry Cooney Ring IQ: Sam Langford Chin: David Tua Stamina: Ike Ibeabuchi Defense: Jimmy Young Jab: Carl Williams Right hand: Earnie Shavers Left hook: David Tua Right uppercut: Earnie Shavers Left uppercut: Alexander Povetkin
DMT, I loved all your answers. I would also add some more possibilities: Body punching: Quarry (more steady bombardment rather than one-punch) Ring IQ: I also like Jimmy Bivins in this category and Archie Moore if applicable Chin: George Chuvalo and Randy Cobb are also good candidates Stamina: The only category I raised an eyebrow on. Never really would have thought of Ike here. I thought Harry Wills, Bivins and Eddie Machen would be good candidates Jab: Cooney (absolutely unbelievable the way he ripped Young up with the jab) Left uppercut: I also thought of Cooney and Razor Ruddock here Good subject matter.
Jimmy Bivins but give that man pretty much any capable HWs body 230+ about 6ft3 with some stamina, I don’t think he losses, ain’t no HW boxers I can think of today as good as Bivins probably none at all overall, he was a great fighter and a real professional.
Same rules as dmt stipulated, but only choosing one fighter per category (with some new categories on top of that). Counter-Punching: Archie Moore - Some of the best counter-punching, now at heavyweight! Imagine a counter right with Shavers' power. Punch Variety: Jerry Quarry - Quarry knew exactly where to hit guys and when to hit them. Excellent to the body and to the head. Combination Punching: Andrew Golota - Just go back and watch the Bowe fights. Some of the best I've seen at heavyweight. Hand Speed: Mitch Green - Insanely quick hands. Good catch by @Bronze Tiger. Ring IQ: Sam Langford - Can't get much smarter than the tiny Canadian terror himself. Footwork: James Toney - Sharp, technical, effective. Killer at heavyweight. Chin: Randall "Tex" Cobb - Would've chosen Lyle, but Cobb took much more punishment than Lyle ever would've been able to. Stamina: Ike Ibeabuchi - He and Tua broke the punchstat record for heavyweights back in their 12 round match, he deserves it. Defense: Jimmy Young - The guy who kept himself safe against the strongest that the '70s had to offer. Foreman, Norton, Lyle, Shavers. Left Jab: Carl Williams - One of the sharpest jabs at heavyweight, pounded tons of guys like Cooper, Ferguson, and Morrison with it. Right Cross: Earnie Shavers - Without a doubt THE heaviest punch that ever was and ever will be. No questions here. Left Hook: Cleveland Williams - Likely as strong (if not stronger than) as the bullet that Williams was shot with. Good pick by @swagdelfadeel Right Hook: Bernardo Mercado - Would've chosen Cooper for this spot, but Weaver said that Mercado was stronger. Pulverising. Right Uppercut: Bert Cooper - A sneaky punch that ripped apart an unready Holyfield in '91. Left Uppercut: Gerry Cooney - Split Young's face in their "Mask of Blood" affair and sent Norton to the canvas quick.
