If McCallum cannot press him back or make him pay hard enough to not advance forward, it's over.

    Hi Buddy.
At first glance you have a good point, and it would seem very unlikely a rough house brawler like Fullmer would have the nuance to outbox a smooth operator like McCallum, thing is Gene had a frustrating style to combat, the cross armed defense, the booming overhand right, add to this his durability, stamina, and a very sound chin, made him a formidable fighter, he outpointed many a good fighter in his pomp, not least Robinson himself, granted the sugar man was not in his prime, but still a feat not many had succeeded in doing, he also had notable wins over ranked MWs of the standing : Gil Turner, Rocky Castellani, Ralph Jones, Spider Webb, Ernie Durando, Joey Giardello, and the strong and fierce Frenchman Charles Humez, he turned boxer to vanquish the redoubtable Basilio, so when asked he could box, albeit brawling was his game, so I am not so sure he couldn't outbox Mike over 15, thinking it would be close either way.
I have not seen much from you lately, shame because you posts are always interesting, and on point.

Gene has no chance at all, even in Utah.

From what I recall only Dick Tiger managed to back him up at Fullmer's own game.

I grew up watching Gene Fullmer club and maul some of boxing's toughest middleweights. He was a force and totally merciless in the ring. But I think McCallum knocks Gene out. Ray Robinson showed in '57 what can happen if you hit Fullmer just right.

    Hi Buddy.
Ray certainly did inflict a mighty KO on Fullmer, mind you he was the only fighter to do so, and we are in agreement Gene fought in era full of tough middleweights , I don't know if Mike knocks him out no one can, I will say the left hook that levelled him was truly a one in a million, for sure fighters have been KOd with left hooks down the ages, Charles / Satterfield, Foster / Tiger, stand out, but the Robinson left hook came from a lower perspective, almost hip level, unique indeed, not saying Mike couldn't knock Gene out, but I feel it would have to a perfect once in a lifetime punch by McCallum, to achieve said result, that said respect your view and standpoint.

I think this is a case of Fullmer being very unorthodox troubling Mike.
Add the strength of Fullmer and the incredibly awkward punches he throws and I could see him mauling Mike to a decision win.
Dick Tiger was one of the few who could match Fullmer in strength which troubled Gene.

I agree, Fulmer by a very ugly split decision. And the one word you used is how Fulmer would do it,,Mauling.
