    Hi Buddy.
Good call, also you could add: Cooper / Bugner , was viewed at the time as a passing of the guard fight, Henry had fought valiantly against American opponents over the preceding decade , with varying results, having cleaned up the British heavyweight scene, Bugner was seen as the heir apparent and the british fight fraternity were in the main hoping for a Bugner win, as to the fight it was a close affair, and a tad more aggression from Joe ( as always ) he might have convinced the judges, and the public who was the winner, I have had some meaningful conversations with Cooper post the fight at various different boxing functions, and at his golf classic event, he was not in the mood to forgive Gibbs, he felt that the ref was leant on to give the fight to Bugner in the event of a close encounter, a normally geniall sort, is ire was up when discussing turned to this fight, shame because it seemed to haunt him for the rest of his life.
Stay safe Noel, chat soon buddy.

Remember the fight well Mike especially the controversy over the decision. Shame really as the British public never really took to Joe after he got the verdict over Henry.Shame because there was nothing he could do about it

    Hi Buddy.
You are on the money, excellent breakdown on a truly historical and magnificent fight, all your observations and points are true in my mind, it shows an in depth knowledge of the time and era this fight took place, any poster that is too young or not across the event, could do a lot worse than read your post, many thanks.

Thank you kindly, my good man!! (I was just a young grade school kid when that fight took place-but I STILL remember everything about it like it happened yesterday!! It gripped the nation AND the world!!)

FYI--For everyone who was too young or hadn't "entered the world LOL!!" when Ali and Frazier squared off in the FOTC I cannot recommend this documentary strongly enough. A MUST watch if you want to really get a true retrospective on what that event (and all of the forces that shaped it) was like. OUTSTANDING!!

In my lifetime in my country it's pretty clearly Bruno-Tyson I in my memory. Tyson was already enormous, Bruno was perhaps the most beloved sportsman in a Britain where viewing audiences of 20m were not unheard of for the biggest sporting events. The fight wasn't actually on British network television until the following morning, but people gathered together to listen to it on the radio, which is mad. But it was more the build up. Bruno was everywhere. And when he got busy, people who knew him took his place. At school we were in literal fistfights about who would win, and who was supporting who.

Jheez - was Frank Bruno that popular in the UK then? TBF he was the first good British HW in a very long time and there hadn't been a British HW champion yet for many, many, many decades or something. Also, if I recall correctly - Lennox was not as popular as Bruno because he fought under the Canada flag for long enough to many people.

Out of interest? How well known was Riddick Bowe?

Im only 24 and living in UK. But, I'd say the most hyped fight I can remember was Mayweather - McGregor 1, and Fury - Usyk 1, followed by Fury - Wilder 2.

I think AJ V Fury will have a huge amount of hype in the UK. I really hope it happens, domestic dust ups like this are massive. I was quite surprised about how hyped AJ V Dubois even was.

Here, Bowe wasn't well known at all. There was a lot of interest in Foreman's comeback, and Holyfield was very well known after he fought Mike, but Bowe was fighting in the middle of the night, on paid tv, sometimes. Bruno was on free-to-air UK TV year-round, his fights, and he was only popular light-entertainment shows all the time.
