It just seems like a robbery to me. Marvis has gotten lucky with decisions and other things in ring plenty times throughout his otherwise short career- Such as when the fight didn't get stopped when Tillis was beating the **** out of him. Other than the two top names, most of the fights seem fair, but who knows.

Talking a bit more about Frazier, he certainly wasn't ready for a match against Holmes (especially not on that night, when Larry wanted to put him out of commission quick), but it wasn't necessarily a rare sight to see someone challenge for the title with such a small record. Marvis had just beaten two recognizable names in Broad and Bugner, and considering his family name, he got to challenge while just 10-0.

This all brought David Bey to my mind, who similarly challenged Holmes at just 14-0, after wins over Douglas and Page, and a couple of knockouts of journeyman to boot. It's certainly weird, and I wouldn't say that either of these men DESERVED title shots, but they happened.

Edit: I originally put that Bey challenged Holmes at 10-0, but checked back at the record for something else and realized that I was wrong. Not surprised that nobody corrected me, lol.

Pretty sure this takes the prize. Although the clown antics of Baer v Primo is always astounding. Was like a wrestling match

    Hi guys.
This fight will resonate mainly with the Brits, I would venture, it was for the British title i believe and it pitted Jack Bodell, who would appear on national TV wearing a threadbare cardigan, that was buttoned up out of sync, so a hole at the bottom, where a button should be, also he apparently whilst cutting his grass, managed to also cut his little toe off, up against one of the crudest boxers I have ever seen, that being Danny McAlinden, my oh my, what a farce, they winged big looping shots from out of nowhere, most of which missed by a mile, there was no resemblance of skill, or anything approaching, from memory they both hit the canvas numerous times, some from punches, most from falls, ineptness abounded, McAlinden finally put Bodell down for keeps in the 3rd I think, yea fond memories...
stay safe fellow posters, chat soon.

Nah. Marvis was actually a pretty skilled prospect. He just got caught and couldn't recover.

The Holmes fight with the absurd mismatch was Cobb. I like Cobb, but in terms of boxing skill, he couldn't carry Larry's jockstrap.

Frazier wasn't bad (check out his fight with Bonecrusher). He just had a weak chin and panicked when hurt. I read Joe Frazier's autobiography, which he dedicated a chapter of to Marvis's career. He gave a very blunt assessment of Marvis panicking when hurt, said he'd do it even when sparring.
