"Sugar Ray Robinson, the legendary boxer, famously dreamed about his fight with Jimmy Doyle. Prior to their match in 1947, Robinson had a vivid dream that he would kill Doyle in the ring. This dream was so disturbing that Robinson tried to pull out of the fight, but was persuaded to go ahead with the match after a minister reassured him. Tragically, Doyle did die from injuries sustained during the fight, deeply affecting Robinson for the rest of his life." This content is protected
It’s a lie (most likely) Robinson only said this after the Doyle fight had already happened, Sugar obviously felt a way about it as he would not allow a copy of the bout in his home but he was a mean SOB and it didn’t seem to change how he fought the way it did for Charles, Griffith or Willard… Doyle was mentored simultaneously by Jeffries and Johnson for a time, both of which saw some talent in the young fighter - don’t know the length of time or the finer details but it happened according to a Robinson bio @john garfield advised.
I was actually thinking about JG/Joe Rein and him saying this didn't really affect him, that he was ice cold, or whatever my mind distorted into that. Which was really confirming my suspicion about it at the time, based on other things.
Something like that, I think you’re spot on with what Joe Rein said - Hey Boxed don’t go all static on me but who is your favourite boxer? Your whole time here I’ve never discerned a single “real” boxing opinion or thought from you lol.
