I have always thought Moore was one of the best fighters of his time and he had an amazingly long career with 220 fights and a total of 1472 rounds. He is also the longest reigning Light Heavyweight Champion of all time with a reign of 10 years. Many people when listing their ATGs heavyweights will leave out Archie Moore, but for me he is an all time great. What are your thoughts?
Yes, he cleared up at LHW and then some, holding the title from 36-44. Beat Harold Johnson several times, stopped a prime Harold Johnson who was also an ATG, whilst being 37 himself, that’s one of the greatest wins in boxing history IMO, he beat Maxim, Durrelle, beat and stopped Bivins albeit not in a title fight, stopped Satterfield, beat Nino Valdes, Charley ‘Doc’ Williams and ‘Oakland’ Billy Smith.
Definitely an ATG. Not listed on Archie's official record is his last fight in 1975 that he lost when Charles Bronson threw him off a train in the movie Breakheart Pass.
By the way, the man was 39 years old when he became LHW champ, People talking about Artur Beterbiev the ATG at LHW. Yet these same people say he is getting old at 40, with only 20 fights on his record. Moore had 9 times that many fights when he got the belt. Yes, undoubtedly an ATG.
He fought that many times in 1953, but I think his title was only on the line once. He had to stay busy, though, because he made next to nothing in his challenge of Maxim (who, as champ, got $100,000). I've read Moore made somewhere between $800 to $1,800 for winning the title.
God yes.. his career was otherworldly.. 220 fights spanning nearly 30 years.. was beating the likes of Maxim, Johnson, Olson & Valdez in his 40s.. he's a top 10 of all time imo.
You mean HW right? At LHW this isn't a discussion. Hes a GOAT candidate. You can say hes not an ATG because hes a tier or two above that I guess.
