I think 115-111 is fair. I didn't like the point deduction but thought Benavidez won more rounds down the stretch except for the 11th of course. I predicted Morell would pull the upset beforehand and was wrong but I believe he will learn from this lose and get better. As much as I liked this fight and both fighters, I believe they are both a notch below both Beterbiev and Bivol.
It was super close until the middle rounds when Morrell got tired/did less and the only one working was Benavides then after that Benavidez got tired too and it was close again. Morrell basically gave away the middle rounds. But it was close everywhere else.
I think 115-111 was okay although there were plenty of close rounds so IMHO a closer scorecard was fine. The wide card, obviously, was far too wide. I also think that the point deduction was dodgy.
I feel the fight was scored fairly. If Morrell invested more to the body he could have swung a couple rounds here and there to make it interesting down the stretch. The knockdown for Morrell was negated due to the 11th round ridiculous point deduction but thats boxing. Unpredictable at times. Most times lol. But anyways, good win for Benavidez, he wants Arthur vs Dimitry winner as he should. Benavidez vs Beterbiev would be an insane fight IMO
This is how I see it the first 5 rounds or so were nip and tuck then Benavidez seemed to control the momentum of the fight starting from the 6th round. And he won a majority of the rounds from that point on apart from the 11th round as you said. I think Benavidez winning anywhere between 2 or 4 points is about right. It was competitive and a great fight in spurts but Benavidez did the more consistent work and landed the more eye catching punches. I had it 115-111 exactly the same as 2 of the judges I do think the point deduction was harsh aswell but I don't think it mattered in the overall outcome of the fight.
I had it 8 to 4 . Benavidez is very crafty on the inside , blocking and digging the body then coming up top. Fight went pretty much how I thought except I thought Morrell would wilt in the 2nd half. I was wrong on that part, dude is game as can be and he certainly didn't wilt . Much respect to Morrell
Point deduction- usually it deserves a warning first but in the circumstances I thought it was fair. morell was just taking some good shots and not throwing back, bell goes…quite a while after morrell throws a big shot. It seemed an illegal response to a legal barrage. also, that knockdown was a trip
I thought this was an excellent fight. It’s rare we see good fights like this I think. Top guys going at it in close fights, skills, power, technique, attrition etc no Saudi bling or sucking up necessary or Brit hype, exaggeration or bias. An excellent fight is all I needed. Thanks David and David.
Morrell won rounds 3, 5, 10 and 11. Rounds 1, 2 and 4 were all razor close. So not only should it have been closer, Morrell has an argument that he won outright.
