Am i crazy for thinking Whitaker/Chavez was quite close ?

In all honesty, that was my score, too. I don't recall which rounds were which. And though I flew to SA for the fight (crappy venue for boxing) I did my scoring later on tape, if that matters. All in all, I expected a Fight of the Century and it was an inconclusive and disappointing affair.

 

I had it 116-112 Whitaker, with Chavez winning 1,2,5, and 9 as I recall.

D, despite my wider score, you and i were on the same page. 3 even rounds on my card widened it a bit for Whitaker, but it was all the key rounds for Chavez. Nothing overly exciting here but good looking at it for historical purposes.

yeah it was somewhat close. I had 116-112 Whitaker. But to beat Chavez in a WBC sanctioned fight you had to dominate a la Randall and even he almost got screwed. Whitaker got screwed in the first fight against Jose Luis Ramirez, as well. The WBC (based in Mexico) loved Ramirez and Chavez.

 

You are correct. In fact, I have JLR by one point over Sweet Pea, who hadn’t yet matured and gave some rounds away by not doing anything or literally turning his back and running away.

I haven’t seen the Chavez fight in some years but my memory is that it’s one of those where Pea won his rounds by larger margins than a few I think JC Superstar edged. I don’t think it’s one of those where a good argument can be made for Julio winning it, but he wasn’t completely outclassed nor run out of the ring.

 

I rewatched this fight a couple times about 12 or 15 years ago, and scored it more than once. I don't remember the different scores I got but they were all close, and in one scenario I think I did come up with a D. Id be curious to rewatch again, but bottom line was the rounds provided some close action that was difficult for me to score. In the end though, the idea that the W should have gone to Whitaker is probably correct. I just didn't see it as the robbery of the century. Let's not forget, Whitaker had a habit of making fights close and hard to score in big matchups, like in the de la hoya fight, a lot of people think he won that fight too. Reminds me of Juan Marquez when he had those fights with manmy pacqioa

I posted that on here a few years ago, and at the time got the usual 'you dksab' responses from casuals who have been programmed to believe that particular narrative.

 

Definitely was a much closer than has been generally considered, but if Whitaker only won by two points then it was one of the most decisive two Point fights I have ever seen LOL
