Would boxing be better if we made the gloves 2-6 ounces again?

Of course 8-10 ounce gloves still pack a punch and have been used in sparring for as long as gloves themselves have existed, but do you think the sport would be better off reverting to the gloves of the Dempsey era or even as far back as the Sullivan era? The padding on modern gloves do seem to make the high guard far more secure and reliable than in the past, it also makes it harder to punch through the guard with shots that would find home without gloves.

It would have to mean less rounds most likely.

Currently, I think it is fine.

I think the only change that should be made is letting the thumbs free again.

The goal is to make boxing less dangerous, not more.

No it’s not lol it’s modern gladitoring, it’s dangerous - it would be safer with todays rounds and no gloves honestly, then you can’t tee off on your opponents head, you’d be forced into much more body punching.

I strongly agree. They lessened thumbing but it wasn't worth losing the ability to open up the gloves for catching punches or more intricate grappling.

If we went back to tiny gloves most of the 'elite' modern fighters would have to learn all over again.

Look how stupid Gene Tunney and Archie Moore are with there gloves down… don’t they know you’re meant to take turns hitting one another’s gloves? Arthur Abraham’s is too far evolved for there like - I wonder where Canelo would be in the 40s forced into 175lbs? He’d eventually wind up in the mix with a Conn, Bivins, Moore, Charles etc…I think Tunney would end his entire career with his primitive skills lol.

Yeah in some ways the sport is really not the same with the larger gloves.

I disagree. Bigger gloves mean more sustained slow beat downs. 8 oz gloves would equal more quick KO's as opposed to long beat downs.

    True.

Lesser padding would lead to more concentrated damage, causing more immediate damage in the form of cuts and fractures.
More padding would lead to force being dispersed through a larger area, decreasing immediate damage but increasing concussive force due to taking more padded punches.
