False, James busted his ass while training for a fight.

His toughest opponents were the scales and not over eating.

I saw it once, live. To this day, I think it was one of Toney's worst performances.

    He lost.

But then they 'made up for it" by giving Montel Griffith the win over him in their first fight. I thought Toney dominated Griffith.

Two wrongs do not make one right.

I agree with you on the 1st Griffin fight. Just curious, how did you score the 2nd Griffin fight?

Cant remember but I think Griffith honestly won that one.

He was neither motivated or fully fit.

He’d just fought McCallum just 7 weeks earlier.

He should never have fought so often at that stage of his career.

That’s unheard of today, even when you’re just coming up.

He was burnt out and unmotivated.

He’d just fought Mike McCallum just 7 weeks earlier.

He had a huge amount of respect for Mike.

Mike was an old school technician.

So he’d fought a GREAT fighter, but was then obligated to fight a C level guy, less than 2 months later, what he couldn’t get up for.

He admits himself he lost. Fair and square. Tiberi should have won. But these things used to happen to great fighters of yesteryear. You cannot fight every few months and be in top shape and motivated.

He’d fought Nunn, Reggie and Mike all within a year.

Jackie Kallen should never have had him out so often.

It was too much for him.

The exact same thing happened to Chris Eubank, when he fought every few months.

So it’s a shame that Tiberi got robbed. But this fight gets used to beat James with, mostly in fantasy fights. Normally by ignorant guys who can’t apply context.

James was only 26 when he fought Roy Jones. Yet that was his 47th pro fight.

Tiberi was offered a rematch, yet wouldn’t take it.

I think that they kept him busy to keep his weight from blowing up. I think that is similar to what they did with Hearns in his early career at 147.
The Tiberi fight worked out pretty well for James. For a long time the book on how to beat James Toney was all about getting on top of him and throwing a lot of punches. A lot of guys got beat up because of that and a lot of heavyweights with height and reach advantages walked right to him.

Tiberi fought a gutsy and determined fight and deserved the win. At the same time, it looked like he had performed at his ceiling and was clear that Toney was considerably off form.

I guess his team figured they had better keep Toney busy or he'd ballon up in weight which as history shows he would.
