Brawls with the less durable softer hitting fighter prevailing?

Glad u mentioned them Bronze Tiger. Every fight of each one was gold.

 

Didn't mean that literally but he was certainly not thought of as tough as Tiger, Fullmer and even Carter. He was always thought of as a boxer going into fights but he could certainly brawl.

 

Those four certainly were an entertaining bunch 2 throw together.

 

A ton of Holyfield fights come to mind. Except the durability part.

 

Douglas over Tyson
Byrd over V Klitsckho
Horn over Pacquiao

 

It’s a hard needle to thread, especially to find outcomes like this that were brawls. Usually the lighter hitter, less durable guy has to outbox the durable puncher (and the latter is a fairly rare breed; lots of big hitters aren’t strong in the whiskers deparatment).

Here’s what I could come up with that I don’t think have been mentioned:

Leon Spinks over Bernardo Mercado

Mike Rossman over Victor Galindez (maybe a toss-up on harder hitter here)

James Scott over Eddie Mustafa Muhammad

 

People don't like journeymen. White - Douglas, Martin - Witherspoon, and many other fights where the "wrong guy" wins go over people's heads. Cinderella stories have to be big.

 

Some may say Whyte vs Chisora. Many have said Chisora hit them the hardest including David Allen, who has shared a ring with both, but I still suspect Whyte hits harder.

 

Duran arguably punches less harder than Barkley.

 

Alas it was a boxing match, the way Duran got spun on his feet was just another awesome Duran moment in the recovery, he had so many the way he store Hagler down after a good round made me rally for him in a fight that happened decades before I born.

 

On the Aussie scene Michael Zerafa stopping Jeff Horn in their first fight was a fine example of this.

 

I felt like it was half a boxing and half a brawl,you cannot count how awesome the exchanges were in that fight,this fight unfortunately was probably the reason Duran never came out as awesome as this fight again.

 

Spinks looked good against Mercado, possibly his best career showing. He dominated the big Columbian from the 2nd round and was pretty relentless. I liked Mercado too, shame he didnt fight a few more "names". Lyle and Norton were active (though faded) around that time.
Maybe Mercado could have done the hat trick over fading contenders?

 

Bernie also stopped Trevor Berbick in one, I think Trevor’s first defeat.

Came up as a sparring partner for Oscar Bonavena. So I guess we can say Mercado was Bona-fide.

I wish there was video of his fights with Randall Cobb and Mike Weaver. I’d really like to see those.

 

The lack of recorded fights involving him is just a damn shame, a very exciting puncher with the power of a small army. He was also Weaver's sparring partner ahead of their match, and Mike said that he hit him the hardest out of anybody he's fought.

I've only seen footage of Mercado against Shavers, Spinks, and Holmes in an exhibition. If you guys have any additional footage of him, I'd love to see it.
